Rohatyn is a district center located on the banks of the Hnyla Lypa River (a tributary of the Dniester River) in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. The first written reports about it date back to the XII century, although the territory was inhabited earlier - Paleolithic and Bronze Age objects were found in the vicinity of the city, and several settlements of the X-XIII centuries were excavated.
The town of Rohatyn in its current location has been known since 1415, when Volchko Presluzhych renamed his village Filipovychi to Rohatyn and settled it on the basis of Magdeburg Law. Earlier documents mentioning the name Rohatyn most likely refer to Old Rohatyn, now the village of Pidhorodnia, which was named after 47 years after Rohatyn was moved to a new location. A document by Volchok Presluchycz mentions the city's right to its own wax seal, which depicts a deer antler and the Latin letter V. At the end of the fourteenth century, Rohatyn was a county center, but not for long.
In the Middle Ages, Rohatyn was known as a center of crafts and trade. The commercial and political center of the city was the market square, surrounded by four rows of closely built houses with narrow facades. In the middle stood the town hall, built in 1539. It housed workshops that produced cloth. The buildings of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that line the market square stand on ancient foundations and brick cellars that were once used to store goods.
Rohatyn is also the birthplace of Nastia Lisovska, known as Roksolana. She was born approximately in 1502-1505. She died on April 15, 1558. She was the lawful wife of Sultan Suleiman I the Magnificent. Mother of Sultan Selim II. In 1520, she entered the harem of the sultan and in a short time became his first wife. As a foreigner, she played an important role in the history of Turkey for a long time. A mosque and palace were built in her honor in the city of Mustafa Pasha. She was buried in a mausoleum in Istanbul.
In 1999, a monument to Roksolana was unveiled in Rohatyn (architect Roman Romanyshyn).
