Opillia Pottery Workshop, Rohatyn

Rohatyn, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

The Opillia Pottery Workshop (Opilska Honcharnia) is a creative space in Rohatyn where you can sit at a potter’s wheel and shape your own clay pot, bowl or mug. The studio opened in November 2023 at the Rohatyn Opillia Museum of Local History and is one of the few places in the Prykarpattia region outside Kosiv where you can take a pottery class in an authentic historic town of the Opillia area.

What you can do

  • Work at the potter’s wheel. The studio has several workstations with wheels, so sessions run in small groups under a potter’s guidance.
  • See traditional ceramics. Examples of Opillia earthenware are displayed next to the workspace and show the shapes and patterns of the local tradition.
  • Fire your piece. The workshop has its own kiln; arrange with the organisers when and how to collect your finished work.
  • Sessions for everyone. Workshops are designed for both children and adults, and the museum also runs art-therapy sessions, including for servicemen and women.

The organisers describe working with clay as a creative meditation that helps you set worries aside and unwind after a busy week. That makes the classes a good fit for family outings, school groups or anyone who simply wants to try an age-old craft.

Reviving Opillia pottery

Rohatyn was long a centre of trade and crafts on the old Wallachian Road, and pottery was a common village trade across Opillia. Over time the local tradition almost died out, and the project “Opillia Pottery: Reviving a Lost Craft” set out to bring it back. The museum first planned a pottery studio in 2020–2021 as part of its work on the intangible cultural heritage of the Rohatyn Opillia, and the idea came to life after winning a grant from the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation’s “Culture. Regions” programme.

Who will enjoy it

A pottery class in Rohatyn is a good choice for families with children, school and student groups, and travellers driving from Lviv to the Carpathians who want a meaningful stop along the way. No previous experience is needed: the potter shows you how to centre the clay, pull up the walls and shape your piece. Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty and allow at least an hour to an hour and a half for the session. A souvenir made with your own hands will remind you of Opillia far better than a bought one.
