Museum-monument of wooden architecture and painting of the XVI-XIX centuries - Church of the Holy Spirit, Rohatyn
The church is located in the western part of the city, in the former artisanal suburb of Nove Misto, on a mounded hill above the bank of the Hnyla Lypa River. In the records of the central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv, Rohatyn's St. George's Church is mentioned in the twelfth century, as well as in 1481, 1562, and 1567. But Lviv researcher Volodymyr Vuytsyk introduced 1598 into scientific circulation as the year of the church's foundation according to an inscription on the interior of the church on the north wall of the nave.
It was built without nails; wooden stakes were used if necessary. The length of the building is 22 meters, the width is 7 meters, and the nave is 22 meters high. The altar is separated from the nave by a beautiful five-tiered iconostasis, which is one of the greatest masterpieces of the Lviv school of painting of the late Renaissance. The lush carved ornaments are enhanced with silver and gilding and enriched with polychrome. The iconostasis was created in 1650 at the expense of Rohatyn's brotherhoods. The iconostasis consists of five horizontal tiers: the prelate, the vicarage, the feast or festive, the apostolic, and the prophetic.
In addition to the iconostasis, the church's exposition includes a number of other icons. The oldest painting preserved in St. George's Church is a 16th-century icon "John the Baptist with the Life" (1520): "The Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles," "John the Theologian and the Warrior Longinus," and "Our Lady and Mary Magdalene." Decorative wood carving and sculpture are one of the brightest pages of ancient art in the Carpathian region. The exposition includes royal gates, columns, and candlesticks made of wood. In 1983, the Church of the Holy Spirit became a museum, a branch of the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional Art Museum.
