Salaš pod Maginhradom: Gemer sheep’s cheese and the Mitrovanie feast

Hlavná 206, 980 51 Veľké Teriakovce, Slovakia

A shepherds’ farmstead below a legendary hill

Veľké Teriakovce is a village where the Rimava basin meets the Revúca Highlands, a few kilometres north of Rimavská Sobota. Across the road rises Maginhrad hill: in the 15th century a castle stood there that served as a Hussite fortress, and the Romantic poet Ján Botto dedicated a ballad to it. The memory of the vanished castle lives on in Salaš pod Maginhradom — a timber farmstead built in the style of a traditional shepherd’s yard.

At its heart is a family farm that sells its products under the name Špeciality z farmy (Farm Specialities). It keeps sheep and cattle, with an emphasis on balanced feed, natural movement and long grazing on pasture. Milk from its own animals goes into the cheeses, and the meat is sold fresh straight from the farm. Gemer-Malohont is one of the great sheep-farming regions of Slovakia, and the salaš deliberately keeps this tradition alive.

Why go

  • Buy sheep’s cheese from the farm. The farm shop and online shop sell 100% sheep’s products: lump cheese, smoked oštiepok, Slovak bryndza, smoked salaš cheese, parenica, cheese sticks and Klenovecký syrec — a matured sheep’s cheese for which nearby Klenovec is famous.
  • Eat salaš-style. The restaurant offers traditional regional dishes, food inspired by shepherds’ life and homemade “grandma’s” desserts, and publishes a new daily offer every week.
  • Catch Mitrovanie. Every year in mid-October the salaš hosts the feast marking the end of the grazing season. At the 13th edition in 2026 the head shepherd demonstrated sheep shearing, a local cheesemaker made cheese from fresh sheep’s milk and craftspeople showed wool carding, spinning and weaving; there was a regional-products market, a show of pedigree sheep, halušky-eating and žinčica-drinking contests, a mutton cooking competition, folk ensembles and a ceremonial procession of shepherds. The climax is the old ritual of the head shepherds “reporting” to the farmer, which once meant the end of service on the salaš and settling accounts for the season, and the day closes with everyone singing “Už je Mitra, aj po Mitre…”.

What to taste and buy

Besides cheese, the farm sells lamb and mutton (rack, leg, foreleg, boneless meat, as well as a whole or half lamb), goat’s milk and A2A2 cow’s milk, and even dried mushrooms. At Mitrovanie the stand of the local action group MALOHONT offers tastings of products bearing the Regional Product Gemer-Malohont label: Klenovec syrec, sausages, cold-pressed oils, osúchy flatbreads and blackcurrant wine.
