Ráztocký waterfall and the Oblazy mills (Kvačianska valley)
The Ráztocký waterfall (Ráztocký vodopád) is an eight-metre waterfall on the Ráztoka stream in the Chočské vrchy of northern Slovakia, just above the locality of Oblazy in the upper Kvačianska valley. Below it, the water falling from the rock lip has scoured a deep plunge pool. At Oblazy, at about 750 m, the valley splits into three branches – the Hutianka, Borovianka and Ráztoka valleys – and it is here that the Ráztoka, after rushing down a limestone gorge, joins the Hutianka.
The lower part of the Ráztoka valley is a steep wooded gorge between the hill of Haj (949 m) and an unnamed summit of 914 m: the stream has cut a deep, narrow canyon in the limestone with many cascades, waterfalls, riffles and potholes. The largest of the falls is the Ráztocký waterfall itself; the rest of the gorge is closed to walkers because it lies in the strict Kvačianska dolina reserve (since 1967, 467 ha). The Kvačianska valley itself is a typical karst gorge cut by the Kvačianka into dark Triassic limestones and dolomites: its floor is in places no more than 3 m wide, its slopes exceed 60°, and rock towers rise 100–200 m above the stream. Because of inversion, subalpine and high-mountain species grow in the low parts of the valley – including the alpine edelweiss at 665 m, one of its lowest sites in Slovakia – while warmth-loving species grow on the high rocks.
What to see and do
- The waterfall and the ladder. A wooden ladder stands next to the waterfall, by which you can climb to its upper lip and look into the Ráztoka gorge.
- The mills at Oblazy. A few steps away stand two wooden water mills from the first half of the 19th century – valuable technical monuments. They once worked beside an important road from Liptov to Orava and on to Poland; in 1936 one of them was converted into a sawmill, and later the mills were restored by nature conservationists. The lower mill with its saw works and houses an exhibition of milling technology.
- Viewpoints above the Kvačianska valley – the Roháč rock (817 m) by the road and the wooden platforms Malý Roháč and Kobyliny, the latter 78 m above the stream.
How to get there
The waterfall lies right by the blue trail from Kvačany to Veľké Borové and can be seen from the path (Prosiek – Oblazy, junction); a short path leads to it, crossing the Ráztoka by a ford without a footbridge. The red trail from Kvačany to Huty runs along the Kvačianka valley above the gorge, and from Oblazy the blue trail continues up the Borovianka valley. According to the Liptov tourist organisation, the walk through the Kvačianska valley to the Oblazy mills is easy, about 1 hour and 3 km there and back. The "Prosiecka and Kvačianska valleys" educational trail with 12 stops links the two valleys; there are paid car parks at the start of each, and buses run from Liptovský Mikuláš to Kvačany and Prosiek. The walk is manageable for families with children; the last section to the waterfall, with its ford, is not suitable for prams.
Season and safety
The best time is May to October; in spring and after rain the waterfall is fullest, but the ford is deeper and the wooden ladder and rocks are slippery. The Kvačianska valley is a strict nature reserve: walking along the stream itself is forbidden, keep to the marked trails, do not pick plants or light fires; only authorised vehicles may use the road from Kvačany to Huty. Mountain Rescue Service – 18 300, general emergency number – 112. Information as of October 2026.
Nearby
Beyond the ridge, in the neighbouring valley, is the Červené piesky waterfall in the Prosiecka valley; to the south is the Liptovská Mara reservoir.
