Dunajec River
The Dunajec is a right-bank tributary of the Vistula and one of the most important rivers of the Polish Carpathians. Counting the Czarny Dunajec, it is 247 km long, and its basin covers 6,804 km², almost 4,855 km² of it in Poland and about 1,950 km² in Slovakia. The river rises in the Tatras, crosses Podhale, cuts through the Pieniny, forms the Polish–Slovak border for 17 km, then passes the Beskids and the Sącz Basin onto the lowland and joins the Vistula near Opatowiec. The name is a diminutive of «Dunaj», an old word simply meaning water or river; it is recorded from the early 13th century.
The course: from source to mouth
The source of the Dunajec is taken to be the Wyżni Chochołowski Potok, which rises at about 1,500 m below Wołowiec in the Western Tatras. It continues down the Chochołowska valley as the Siwa Woda and below Witów as the Czarny Dunajec (48 km). The second branch, the Biały Dunajec (31 km), is formed by streams from Zakopane and Poronin. The two meet in Nowy Targ at about 577 m, where the Dunajec proper begins.
The river flows east through the wide Nowy Targ Basin below the Gorce, takes in the Białka and skirts the Spiš Pieniny. The former Czorsztyn gorge is now filled by Lake Czorsztyn: the Niedzica dam, 404 m long and 59.4 m high, holds a lake 9 km long covering about 10.5 km², up to 50 m deep near the dam. Below it lies the smaller Sromowce compensation reservoir. Between Sromowce Niżne and Szczawnica the river cuts the Pieniny in a narrow gorge about 8 km long with cliffs up to 300 m high; here it forms the border and flows past Slovak Červený Kláštor. At Krościenko nad Dunajcem the Dunajec turns north, passes the Tylmanowa gorge between the Lubań and Radziejowa ranges, and in the Sącz Basin below Nowy Sącz receives its largest tributary, the Poprad. Further down it is dammed by the Rożnów and Czchów reservoirs. Other tributaries are the Grajcarek, Kamienica, Ochotnica, Łososina and Biała.
What to see along the river
- Niedzica Castle (Dunajec Castle) and the Czorsztyn Castle ruins face each other across the water.
- Lake Czorsztyn is the largest lake on the river, with views of the Tatras.
- Červený Kláštor — Carthusian monastery in the Pieniny stands on the Slovak bank at the start of the gorge.
- St Michael the Archangel Church in Dębno is a wooden church in the valley close to the river.
On the water: rafting and kayaking
The oldest depiction of rafting through the Pieniny gorge is a 1589 wall painting in the old church in Krościenko. In the first half of the 19th century timber from the Tatras and Gorce was floated down the Dunajec and the Vistula to Gdańsk, and from about 1831 the trip became an outing for guests of the Szczawnica spa. Today this is the Dunajec raft trip: Polish raftsmen in highland dress steer rafts made of plank boats, and the season runs from 1 April to 31 October. The landings are at Sromowce Wyżne (Kąty) and Sromowce Niżne; to Szczawnica it is about 18 km and 2 h 15 min, to Krościenko 23 km and 2 h 45 min. Slovak raftsmen run their own trip from Červený Kláštor: Goral raftsmen of Červený Kláštor: wooden-raft trip on the Dunajec. Kayaks and pontoons also use the gorge: Pieniny National Park charges a water-route ticket of 8 złoty, reduced 4 złoty (as of November 2026), including for people paddling their own boat.
Nature and safety
The gorge lies in two national parks, the Polish Pieniny National Park and the Slovak PIENAP; its banks are built of white Pieniny limestone 120–145 million years old. The Dunajec is prone to sudden floods: the water level in the lower course varies by up to 11 m, and major floods struck in 1934 and 1970. The water is cold even in summer and the current in the gorges is fast, so go on the water only on an organised trip or wearing a life jacket. Mountain rescue is GOPR: 985 or +48 601 100 300, general emergency number 112; on the Slovak bank, HZS 18 300.

Above the gorge rise Trzy Korony and Sokolica, both with views of the Dunajec meanders and the Tatras. Along the right bank, through Slovakia, runs the walking and cycling Pieninská cesta, and on the left bank the trail Sromowce Niżne – Krościenko nad Dunajcem.
