Thurzo House — Central Slovak Museum, Banská Bystrica

Námestie SNP 4, 974 01 Banská Bystrica, Slovakia

The Thurzo House (Thurzov dom) is one of the finest buildings on the main SNP Square in Banská Bystrica, with Renaissance sgraffito on its façade and an ornate attic parapet. Since 1958 it has been the seat of the Central Slovak Museum (Stredoslovenské múzeum), run by the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region, and after a major reconstruction in 2019–2022 it houses the modern permanent exhibition "Tranzithistory" on the history of the house, the town and the region. The historic core of Banská Bystrica has been a town heritage reserve since 1955.

The house takes its name from Ján Thurzo (1437–1508), a native of Betlanovce and a Kraków entrepreneur. In 1495–1548 it was the seat of the Thurzo–Fugger mining company, and Thurzo rebuilt the house in Late Gothic style: stone portals, the vaulted passage, a timber beamed ceiling and the Green Room with its barrel vault and wall painting survive from that time. Around 1580 the wealthy merchant Samuel Schmeidl added a second floor and gave the house its splendid Renaissance appearance. In 1705–1706 the Economic Council, with authority over the whole of Hungary at the time, sat here; in 1706 Ján Sretter, a general in the army of Francis II Rákóczi, bought the house for 5,000 gold pieces, and in 1761 it was damaged by fire. On 18 October 1944 an aerial bomb hit the house; it then decayed for years, and in 1948 a demolition permit was even issued. It was saved by the precious paintings of the Green Room: in 1952 the demolition order was cancelled, and after restoration the museum moved in in August 1958.

What to see

  • The "Tranzithistory" exhibition (opened on 25 June 2022) on two floors — more than 2,000 objects from the museum's archaeological, historical, numismatic, ethnological and art collections. It traces the development of the house, of Banská Bystrica and of Central Slovakia, and an animated film presents the findings of the building's heritage survey.
  • The Green Room with its Late Gothic vault and wall painting — visited with an audiovisual guide on a separate ticket.
  • The building itself — the sgraffito façade, the attic, stone portals and lunette vaults with stucco decoration added around 1580.

The museum also holds temporary exhibitions and family programmes. It owns two more buildings — the Matthias House by the town castle and the Tihányi manor house in Radvaň.

Practical information

The Thurzo House stands right on SNP Square, in the historic centre of Banská Bystrica. From October 2026 to May 2027 the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday (with a lunch break at weekends) and closed on Mondays. A ticket for the permanent exhibition costs €6 for adults and for an exhibition €5, family tickets €13 and €12; the Green Room is a separate €3. The full price list is in the "At a glance" box. An audio guide to the exhibition costs an extra €3, and guided tours in Slovak or English can be booked for groups.

Allow about 1.5 hours for the exhibition. SNP Square, with its clock tower and old houses all around, makes a pleasant continuation of the walk after the museum.
