Torhovyshche Souvenir Market, Verkhovyna

Verkhovyna, Ivano-Frankivsk region, Ukraine

Torhovyshche is a modern souvenir market right in the centre of Verkhovyna, the capital of the mountain Hutsul region. Instead of random roadside stalls, a neat street of thirteen wooden pavilions was built here, home to local craftspeople, cheesemakers, makers of fruit liqueurs and Hutsul souvenir shops. The name comes from an old word, torhovyshche — the place where people not only traded but also met, shared news and relaxed. That is exactly how the market was conceived: a public space with benches, greenery and room for an unhurried stroll between the pavilions.

Why go

Verkhovyna is the heart of the Hutsul region, and Torhovyshche lets you get to know its crafts in half an hour without searching for artisans across the mountains. Goods are made by craftspeople from Verkhovyna and the neighbouring mountain villages, who pass their skills down the generations. You can ask sellers where things come from, taste local cheese and buy gifts that really were made in the Hutsul region. The market combines well with a walk around the town centre or a trip to the Chornohora range.

What to buy and taste

  • Craft cheese at the pavilion of the Midnyi Chan cheese dairy: young and aged cheeses, budz and bryndza.
  • Embroidered shirts and ethnic accessories, beaded jewellery and modern items with Hutsul motifs.
  • Wooden tableware and carved souvenirs, ceramics and embroidered towels.
  • Homemade wines and liqueurs, honey, herbal blends and wild-berry jams.

A Hutsul trading tradition

In the past people came down from the mountain hamlets to fairs in Verkhovyna (called Zhabie until 1962) to sell wool, bryndza, lizhnyk blankets and carvings and to buy what they needed. The tradition is still alive: next to Torhovyshche there is the ordinary Verkhovyna market on Hrushevskoho Street, where locals buy food and household goods. Torhovyshche, by contrast, focuses on visitors and crafts, so choosing souvenirs here is tidier and easier.
