Церква Благовіщення Пресвятої Богородиці – пам’ятка архітектури національного значення, одна із найстаріших церков не тільки Коломиї та Івано-Франківської області, але й усієї Західної України. Дана святиня вважається найціннішим взірцем архітектури, який повністю відображає характерний стиль, притаманний гуцульському сакральному будівництву.
General Information and Description
The Annunciation Church was built, as stated in the inscription on its doorframe, in 1709 (there is another version regarding the year of construction, but more on that later). Historians tend to believe that the construction work was carried out by masters from Snyatyn, but whether this is actually true remains a matter of speculation today.
As mentioned above, the Annunciation Church in Kolomyia is the most perfect representative of Hutsul wooden architecture. If you walk around its perimeter, you can see that all the facades of the building are equal to each other and crafted down to the smallest details. Today, the church is cruciform, however, it turns out it was not always like this.
Initially, the church was three-part and most likely one-story. Only in the mid-18th century were two additional rooms added to it from the south and north. As a result, the shape of the church at its base became cruciform. It is worth noting that all the expansion work was done so perfectly that it is simply impossible for a non-professional to notice the additions! This is what the skill of Ukrainian craftsmen means...
The church appears somewhat squat, with a clearly defined horizontal composition, and this effect is enhanced by the wide overhang around the entire perimeter of the building, which creates a shadow beneath it (for this architectural element, the local population affectionately calls their shrine "pecherichka", meaning little mushroom).
The church, together with the two-tiered bell tower, forms a single wooden architectural complex located in the old cemetery of Kolomyia. Currently, the church is active, and services are held there.
History of the Annunciation Church
Currently, there are two versions regarding the year of the church's construction – 1587 and 1709. Despite the existence of two viewpoints regarding the year of the church's construction, an examination of the main architectural nodes of the building allows us to attribute its construction to the end of the 16th century (the wooden bell tower was built later – in the 18th century). We will leave the disputes about the exact year of the shrine's construction to historians and experts, while we can enjoy this Hutsul architectural masterpiece.
In 1765, the church was first repaired, and in 1845 it was rebuilt (two more rooms were added), after which it became cruciform in its base, and in 1944-45, the walls of the church were covered with ornamental oil paintings.
In the early 60s of the 20th century, the Annunciation Church was removed from the register of architectural monuments and closed. However, thanks to the intervention of Hryhoriy Nykonovych Lohvyn, a well-known Ukrainian art historian and architect, the shrine was included in the National Register of Architectural Monuments in 1968.
The premises were completely restored in 1980, and the iconostasis was completed between 1980-82. In 1983, a Museum of Easter Egg Painting was opened in the church premises. Since February 1990, the Annunciation Church has been transferred to the church community of Kolomyia.
