Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (17th-18th century) in Vorokhta

Uniqueness of the Temple

The Vorokhta Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a single-story, cross-shaped church that effortlessly and completely naturally grows from the native Carpathian mountains, like a giant spruce. Looking at this masterpiece of Hutsul sacred architecture, one gets the impression that ancient carpenters took one giant Carpathian primeval tree and, like Michelangelo, trimmed away everything unnecessary, just as he stripped the excess white marble from his legendary David. As a result, the Hutsul masters created not just a temple, but a true harmony, perfect and ideal in proportions and endlessly gentle in its lines.

However, despite this, it was in Hutsulshchyna that such barbarism began to be practiced, aimed at protecting wooden architectural monuments from destruction, such as "cladding" churches with tin armor, which instead of protecting the walls from the elements, actually accelerates their decay. Therefore, today it is very rare to see a Hutsul church in its original form, without metal scales.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Vorokhta has been very fortunate – it has never had to don a fashionable iron dress. Thanks to this, we can today see what true, authentic Hutsul churches looked like in ancient times and admire their incredible beauty.

Description of the Temple

By typological characteristics, the church is cross-shaped, five-part, single-story, in short – a structure characteristic of the Hutsul school of traditional sacred construction. The square of the central log structure gradually transitions into an octagon, which is topped with an 8-sided tent roof with a finial.

The side log structures are covered with gable roofs, and the entire building is encircled by a wide eaves. The shape of the church is distinguished by incredibly exquisite proportions, as well as harmony of volumes. Thanks to this, the temple is one of the most perfect and expressive examples of wooden temple construction by the Hutsuls.

History of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The exact date of the construction of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is not definitively known. However, historians believe the temple was built in 1615 (according to another version – in 1654-57). However, the church was not built in Vorokhta, but in the village of Yablunytsia. The shrine was moved to Vorokhta only in 1780. For about 140 years, the shrine remained unchanged (most likely, some ongoing repairs were carried out, but we know nothing about that).

By the 1920s, the church had significantly deteriorated and began to collapse. As a result, in 1925, all icons and valuables were transferred to the Church of Peter and Paul, which was being built near the cultural center of the town of Vorokhta.

The shrine could only be restored in 1979. However, the complete restoration of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was completed in 1994. In the same year, the temple was consecrated and handed over to the community.

It is worth noting that the modern interior of the shrine partially contains ancient paintings and frescoes. Next to the church is a wooden bell tower, which today houses a local museum.
