Historical and Ethnographic Museum "Ukrainian Antiquity" in Yaremche

7

The building housing the museum "Ukrainian Antiquity" is somewhat strange and, in my opinion, not entirely suitable for a museum that collects unique antique items. However, that is not the point, as we are interested in the exhibition.

So, once you enter the exhibition halls, it feels as if you are transported in a time machine to a true palace, a genuine Temple of Culture of the peoples who lived in the valleys of the Carpathian rivers in the 19th-20th centuries. On the snow-white walls of the museum, ancient photographs, paintings of Carpathian landscapes and still lifes, icons, and a portrait of Kobzar are displayed.

In one of the exhibition halls, instead of paintings, unique antique painted plates are hung, just as the Boykos and Hutsuls decorated their homes in the not-so-distant past.

In another room, various tools of the mountain people are gathered – from spindles and looms for making woolen blankets to pitchforks and rakes.

In yet another hall, carved chests for the dowries of rich and poor brides, everyday and festive clothing of Hutsuls, Hutsul women, and their children are displayed. Here, embroidered shirts and skirts, bags, necklaces, sheepskin coats, colorful leather boots, and more are collected.

The museum also houses a huge collection of musical instruments and dishes – everyday and festive, clay, wooden, and glass, rare books (written in Latin, Old Hebrew, and Church Slavonic) and much more.

Overall, the exhibition presented in the "Ukrainian Antiquity" museum quite thoroughly recreates the life of the 19th-20th centuries from several regions of Ukraine – Hutsulshchyna, Boykivshchyna, Bukovyna, and Pokuttya.

Attention! The museum can only be visited by prior arrangement. For contacts and directions, see the main website.
