Church of St. Demetrius of Thessaloniki, Tatariv
The Church of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica in the small village of Tatariv was built in 1870. The church was erected in honor of the righteous great martyr Dmytro Slutsky. The architect F. Menchynskyi was the author of the church project. According to other sources, the church dates back to 1856. Obviously, it was built on the site of a previous wooden church. The church was completely covered with shingles until the late 1980s.
The church in Tatariv belongs to the original works of the famous Hutsul school of folk architecture. The wooden church has a small area and a cruciform layout. The roof of the temple is made of shingles - a building material. On the walls of the temple are preserved works of art of the 19th century. A rather large iconostasis consists of five tiers and was painted by a local master A. Orzhekhovsky. The tetrapod was made by a local craftsman in 2002.
This is one of the ancient monuments of national importance that have survived to this day. Its original construction is an interesting architectural example of the masters of the Hutsul folk school: cruciform in plan, one-domed, with a canopy on figuratively carved log projections. The plan of the church is characterized by an extended central log house and rather short side projections. The central log house is covered with a plastic octagonal tent and is located on a large octagonal structure. The bell tower is no less original.
Another low octahedron with horizontal holes (for better distribution of the bell sounds) and a small hipped top, just like the temple, seems to cut into its low tetrahedron, which is also low but widest with four protrusions.
The church is located in the center of the village, between the road and the river, on the territory of the cemetery and overlooks the roadway. In this cemetery you can find ancient monuments and grave vaults. Above all this rises a huge crucifix, which is clearly visible outside the church grounds. From all sides the temple is surrounded by a low stone fence. Entrance to the church grounds is possible through the central gate, which is always open to parishioners during the day.
Also worth visiting in the area are the Church of the Presentation in Polianytsia, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Nadvirna, and the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in Vorokhta.
