Holy Ascension Church, Volovets

The Orthodox community in Volovets and Kanora was founded in 1925 by Father Lev Tyblevych, an emigrant from Russia (or possibly Ukraine, since he spoke Ukrainian), who became the first Orthodox priest there. The initiator of the Orthodox movement among local people was Andrii Betsa.

The Holy Ascension Church of Volovets, which is currently the property of the Orthodox community belonging to the Moscow Patriarchate, was built in 1888-1895. According to legend, it was built by the Greek Catholic and Orthodox church communities of the village in turn. The bells were moved from the wooden Orthodox church damaged in 1943, which was dismantled by local people from Magyarivka whose houses were damaged in a railway accident and used for housing. Until 1946, the church belonged to the Greek Catholic community, and after the liquidation of the Greek Catholic Metropolis, the church community was assigned to the Moscow Orthodox Patriarchate and the church was transferred to it.

Since 2002 and until now, Archpriest Roman Gludzyk has been the Orthodox priest. Despite his young age, on his inspiration, the community raised funds and ordered a new painting of the church, which was completed in 2005-2006. In 2007, the iconostasis frame made in 1965 was restored. An auxiliary building was also built near the church, which harmonizes with the church building. In 2014, the outer walls of the church were repaired and painted, the roof and domes were re-roofed, and the crosses were restored. The church building now has a well-groomed, elegant appearance and is one of the village's jewels.

An old stone cross stands on the territory of the church. According to legend, it was made at the expense of the Bahanych family and installed in 1904 in the center of the village. During the Soviet era, the cross was thrown into the Vycha River, but the believers retrieved it at night, transported it on a cart, and installed it near the church.
