Naguyevychi State Historical and Cultural Reserve
The State Historical and Cultural Reserve "Naguevychy " (Park of Naguevychy) is a popular Ukrainian skansen created on the territory of the Franko family estate, which today acts as a creative platform for preserving the historical memory of Ivan Franko, developing Ukrainian culture and educating young people using the methodology "Come because it's interesting here!".
The mission of the reserve: Popularization of Ivan Franko's life and work through the reserve as a platform for the development of Ukrainian culture, preservation of historical memory and education of Ukrainian youth...
The Ukrainian Reserve has the following permanent programs:
1. The Ivan Franko Literary and Memorial Museum with the sculptural composition "Ivan Franko and World Literature" and the writer's house.
Tourists can not only get acquainted with the museum exhibits of Ivan Franko's archive, but also with artifacts related to the history of Nahuyevychi and the surrounding area, including authentic ancient manuscripts, objects of sacred culture and ethnography. The museum's most valuable exhibits are metric and barn books, the "golden book" of the nineteenth-century Drohobych Basilian Normal School, which records the name and surname of the student, Ivan Franko, his classmates and teachers, numerous lifetime editions of his works, the posthumous mask of the thinker, and many other interesting things. Among other things, the museum hosts creative educational programs and scientific conferences that take place in a modern conference hall.
2. Ivan Franko's Estate Museum.
Opposite the literary-memorial house, across the road, is the museum-estate of Ivan Franko's parents, which was recreated based on the writer's ethnographic essay "My Father's House" in 1981. The estate includes a house, a smithy of Yakiv Franko, the writer's father, a barn, a well, an apiary, and an incomparable apple orchard.
In the house, the museum keepers keep things that Ivan Franko's hand touched: books he used to study, a set he gave to his relatives for a wedding during a visit to the village, the family's dining table, icons, photographs of young Franko, things of that time that may have been in the houses of the poet's neighbors, or even in his house, a cradle, a stove, and more.
Since 2014, the museum-estate of Ivan Franko's parents has been participating in the program "The Best Sights of Ukraine - chosen by the People". Since 2017, on the anniversary of Ivan Franko's birth, the Naguyevychi State Historical and Cultural Museum has been holding "Festivals at the Franko Estate" with the involvement of numerous authentic historical reconstructions and modern creative cultural projects.
3. The Ivan Franko Trail Reserve Art and Memorial Complex.
It includes a protected forest area and several sculptural compositions: "Ivan Franko's Path" - where Ivan Franko created his first masterpieces, "Glade of Fairy Tales" - where "Mykyta the Fox" comes to life with guides, a park with an ancient pond, a summer theater, a sacred chapel of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and a route for cyclists "Franco-Rover" that stretches for 1 km to the miraculous spring "Yaryna".
Ivan Franko Literary and Memorial Museum, Nahuyevychi
There are 4 museums of Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko in the world, three of which are located in Ukraine. One of them is a literary and memorial complex in the village of Nahuyevychi, the village where the writer was born.
The Ivan Franko Museum was opened after the Second World War, in 1946. At that time, all the exhibits were placed in the largest house in the village, which had nothing to do with the writer. Only in 1981 was the museum "moved" closer to Ivan Franko's parental home.
It is interesting that in just a few years a small house-museum has turned into a huge historical complex. It includes many stone and wooden sculptures, the museum building, and the writer's parental home.
The entrance to the literary museum is marked by the ensemble "Ivan Franko and World Literature". In addition to the writer himself, the sculptors captured images of great prose writers whose works were translated by Franko at different times. The stone pillars depict bas-reliefs of Leo Tolstoy, Mickiewicz, Rustaveli, Pushkin, and many other masters of words.
The exposition of the literary museum is so large that it occupies two spacious halls. The first of them includes household items, school supplies, and documents related to Franko's childhood and youth in Drohobych. The most valuable exhibit in this collection is the "golden book" of the Drohobych Normal School, where the writer studied. It is interesting that this document is a kind of academic performance rating, and Ivan Franko's name is the first on the list.
The second hall is dedicated to honoring the writer's memory. Here you can see paintings and articles dedicated to Franko and his literary heroes.
The tour of the museum should be completed with a visit to the parental home of the Ukrainian genius. The room still contains household items and textiles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
A huge historical complex "Naguyevychi" has grown up around the literary museum, reflecting the life and way of life of Franko's fellow villagers. A walk through the colorful park will be a great end to the tour.
