The first mention of "Chornyi Zamok" (Schwarzes Schloss) appears in the chronicles of the city of Stanislaviv (Stanislawow) between 1705 and 1720. According to legend, "Chornyi Zamok" was built by the famous Ukrainian figure Yurii Franz Kulchytskyi (Jerzy Franciszek Kulczycki) for his wife Maria Meyer (Maria Meyer) between 1687 and 1689. Yurii Franz Kulchytskyi (1640-1694) came from the Ukrainian noble family Kulchytskyi-Shelestovych from the village of Kulchytsi-Shlyakotski, near the Royal Free Town of Sambir (Sambor). From this village, besides Yurii Kulchytskyi, three Cossack hetmans originate:
- Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachnyi - hetman of the Zaporizhian Host from 1616 to 1622
- Marko Zhmaylo-Kulchytskyi - hetman of the Registered Cossacks in 1625
- Pavlo But (Pavliuk) - hetman of the Zaporizhian Cossacks from 1637 to 1638
"Chornyi Zamok" was built on the banks of the wide and full-flowing river Vyshenka, which has now turned into a small stream. Surrounding the "Castle" was a dense forest, which was so impenetrable that it was called the "Black Forest" by the people. In honor of this forest, it received its name "Chornyi Zamok". The fortress-castle protected the city of Stanislaviv from enemies attacking from the city of Stryi, and was connected to Stanislaviv by underground passages, with a large moat filled with water surrounding the walls of the "Castle". Yurii Franz Kulchytskyi is considered the author of the recipe for "Viennese coffee". In 1684, he opened one of the first "Viennese coffee houses" in the city of Vienna. The first coffee houses in Ukraine were opened in the cities of Kamianets-Podilskyi, Stanislaviv, and Lviv.During World War I, fierce battles took place near Stanislaviv. The historical part of the city and "Chornyi Zamok" were almost completely destroyed. In 2003, the ruins were restored based on engravings from the 18th century. "Militari Vertutti" (Military Valor) and "Honor et Patrie" (Honor and Fatherland) are the slogans of "Chornyi Zamok", which are written on the wall of each hotel room. The spirit of "Chornyi Zamok" is the spirit of military valor and service to one's country.
