Demänovská Cave of Liberty
Slovakia's largest cave system
The Demänovská Cave of Liberty (Demänovská jaskyňa slobody) lies on the right side of the Demänová valley on the northern slopes of the Low Tatras, 13 km south of Liptovský Mikuláš and a few kilometres below the Jasná ski resort. It is Slovakia's most visited show cave and part of the Demänovské jaskyne national natural monument, the country's longest cave system (over 40 km). The entrance in the Točište side valley is at 870 m.
The cave was carved by the underground Demänovka river and its tributaries. It is 11,117 m long with a vertical range of 130 m and is listed as a Ramsar wetland. In 1921 Alois Král, together with A. Mišura and other explorers, discovered it and named it the ‘Temple of Liberty’. The first halls were shown to visitors in 1924, the new entrance in Točište was cut in 1928, and permanent electric lighting was installed in 1931. Cave bear bones were found in the Bear Passage.
What to see
- Standard tour — 1,150 m, 86 m of height difference, 913 steps, about 60 minutes. The underground bed of the Demänovka, karst pools (including the Emerald Pool), river-carved passages and rich dripstone on the upper levels.
- Long tour — 2,150 m, 1,118 steps, about 100 minutes; physically demanding. It adds the Great Dome — the largest accessible underground space in Slovakia, with an underground riverbed and soft snow-white moonmilk — plus the Pink Hall and the King's Gallery with calcite ‘water lilies’, cave pearls and pools.
Both routes are guided, with commentary on how the cave formed and its history. It is a good family outing on a hot or rainy day, but hundreds of steps call for reasonable fitness.
