Church of St Michael the Archangel in Smolnik

38-713 Smolnik (gmina Lutowiska), dojazd od drogi nr 896, Poland

The Church of St Michael the Archangel in Smolnik is a wooden church in the San valley in the east of the Polish Bieszczady; since 2013 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine". It is a rare example of a Boyko church: according to Polish Wikipedia, the only surviving church of this type in the Bieszczady and one of three in Poland. Today it serves as a Roman Catholic filial church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and is part of the Podkarpackie Wooden Architecture Route.

The first church in Smolnik is mentioned in 1589; its successor, built in 1602, was burned by the Tatars in 1672. The present building — the fourth — was consecrated on 1 August 1791. For over a century and a half it was a parish church: first Orthodox, from 1697 Greek Catholic. In 1951, under a border exchange between Poland and the USSR, Smolnik passed to Poland and its inhabitants were resettled to Soviet Ukraine. The houses were dismantled, hay was stored in the abandoned church, its walls and dome were whitewashed, destroying the paintings, and the surviving icons were taken to the depository in Łańcut. Two icons of 1547 — the Dormition and the Hodegetria — are now in the National Museum in Lviv. In 1969–1973 the church was repaired by traditional hand methods, in 1974 it was handed to the Roman Catholic parish, and in 2004–2005 it underwent a major renovation.

What to see

  • The archaic Boyko form: a three-part log structure (narthex, nave, sanctuary) of almost equal height with a wider nave, tent roofs with small cupolas and broad eaves resting on projecting beams.
  • The interior with a wooden dome, a sky-like painting in the sanctuary dome and ornamental wall painting; behind the tabernacle are royal doors from Kuryłówka with medallions of the Evangelists. Of the original painting a fragment of a curtain held by angels survives.
  • The cemetery north of the church with a few old gravestones — a quiet trace of the vanished Boyko village.
