Wine and tastings in the Carpathians

Transcarpathia is one of Ukraine’s oldest wine regions. On the volcanic slopes around Berehove, Mukachevo, Vynohradiv and Uzhhorod grow varieties that love a warm autumn: Rkatsiteli, Traminer, Furmint, Isabella, Kadarka. Family wineries invite guests into their cellars, talk about the vines and ageing and hold tastings paired with local cheeses.

Besides wine you can try home-made fruit liqueurs, ciders and other craft drinks, and in summer and autumn catch a young wine festival. A tour of several wineries combines easily with thermal pools, castles and walks through old towns.

Tip: book tastings in advance and plan who is driving — or choose a tour with a transfer. Most wineries sell bottles on site, so bring a sturdy bag.
