Royal Castle in Sanok and the Beksiński Gallery
The Royal Castle in Sanok (Zamek Królewski w Sanoku) stands on a hill above the San in the centre of town and is now home to the Historical Museum. Its most famous treasure is the world's largest collection of works by Sanok-born Zdzisław Beksiński (1929–2005), the painter whose dark fantastic landscapes are known far beyond Poland. Equally valuable for Ukrainian visitors is the collection of Carpathian icons from the Sanok land.
Sanok is one of the oldest towns in the region: the Hypatian Chronicle mentions it under the year 1150. A fortified settlement stood on the castle hill as early as the late 11th century, and in the age of the Rus' princes there was a church of St Demetrius here. Prince Bolesław Jerzy II granted the town Magdeburg rights in 1339. In 1417 King Władysław Jagiełło celebrated his wedding at the castle, and his widow Sophia of Halshany lived here until her death. On the orders of Queen Bona Sforza, in 1523–1548 the starost Mikołaj Wolski rebuilt the Gothic castle as a Renaissance residence. The south wing was pulled down in 1915; it was rebuilt in 2010–2011 and now houses the Beksiński gallery. The museum has been in the castle since 1934.
What to see
- The Zdzisław Beksiński Gallery — paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture and photographs: from the abstract reliefs of the 1950s to the "fantastic period" of the 1970s and the late portrait canvases. The artist lived and worked in Sanok until 1977, when he moved to Warsaw.
- Church art of the 12th–20th centuries — icons rescued from the wooden churches of the Boykos and Lemkos of the Sanok land.
- Sacred art of the 15th–19th centuries, portraits of the 17th–19th centuries, the Maria and Franciszek Prochaska Gallery of 20th-century painting and the Marian Kruczek Gallery.
- Pokuttya ceramics — the largest collection in Poland, donated by Aleksander Rybicki; the archaeological exhibition "Stories Written in the Earth"; the armoury and an observation bunker.
- The viewing terrace by the castle overlooking the San valley.
