Sobień Castle ruins
Sobień is the ruin of a medieval castle on a wooded hill above the San near the village of Manasterzec, a few kilometres north of Lesko. The fortress was built to guard the route along the San valley, and its construction is attributed to King Casimir the Great. It first appears in documents in 1372 as the royal property Soban. Around 1389 Władysław Jagiełło granted it to the knightly Kmita family, who made Sobień their family seat and later even added "Sobieński" to their name. The stone castle formed an irregular quadrilateral: a 12 × 31 m residential wing stood on the south side, defensive walls closed the other sides and a square tower guarded the corner. The estate later passed to the Stadnicki, Ossoliński and Krasicki families.
The castle has an eventful history. According to Jan Długosz, in 1417 King Jagiełło stopped here on his way from Lviv to Sanok, where he married Elżbieta Pilecka. In 1474 the Hungarian army of Matthias Corvinus captured and destroyed the fortress, and in 1512 the Hungarians wrecked it again. Soon afterwards the Kmitas moved their residence to Lesko, and Sobień fell into decline. Since 1970 the hill and the ruins have been part of the "Góra Sobień" nature reserve. A local legend tells of the Black Lady — the ghost of Anna Kmita, said to have accompanied the family when they moved to Lesko.
What to see
- Newly uncovered walls. In 2025–2026 the largest archaeological work since the 1960s took place here. The southern curtain wall, much of the northern one, the tower, remains of the gate with its guardhouse and the outline of the residential building were exposed. Finds include fragments of medieval firearms, a stone cannonball, crossbow bolt heads, coins and a stove tile with a Latin inscription.
- The tower, through which wooden stairs lead into the castle courtyard, and the well-preserved stone window frames on the lower storey.
- A wooden viewing terrace in the southern part of the ruins with views of the bend of the San, the Słonne Mountains and Lesko, and in good visibility even the Bieszczady.
- The "Sobień" educational trail with new information boards about the castle and the Kmita family.
Practical information
After almost a year's closure the ruins reopened to visitors on 26 June 2026. By car: from Sanok take road no. 28 towards Przemyśl; in Załuż turn right onto the local road towards Lesko and continue to the free car park before the start of the trail. From there it is about a 10-minute walk uphill to the top, ending with steep stairs. Entry to the reserve and the ruins is free and there are no set opening hours; a visit takes 15–30 minutes. Dogs are allowed, though the stairs are steep for them. This is a nature reserve: keep noise down, stay on the paths and in spring keep away from trees where birds are nesting. Drone flights may be temporarily banned because of a military aviation zone — check restrictions before flying. Information as of October 2026.
