A church that moved away from the water

The Wooden Articular Church in Svätý Kríž is a Lutheran church in the Liptov region, a few kilometres from Liptovský Mikuláš, considered one of the largest wooden church buildings in Europe. Its cross-shaped interior could hold some four thousand worshippers. It is one of the five articular churches surviving in Slovakia — together with Kežmarok, Leštiny, Istebné and Hronsek. Unlike three of them it is not on the UNESCO list, but it is a national cultural monument (since 1995).

The first wooden church was built in 1693 in the village of Paludza under the strict conditions of the 1681 Articles of Sopron: of wood, away from the village centre, without an entrance from the main road and without a tower. In 1774 the church was substantially rebuilt by the carpenter Joseph Lang — legend says the illiterate master managed the job in eight months. In 1781, in a time of greater religious tolerance, a partly masonry bell tower was added. The old bells were requisitioned in the First World War, and the new ones, cast in 1921–1922, were named Faith, Hope and Love.

In the 1970s the Váh valley was flooded by the Liptovská Mara reservoir, and Paludza was to disappear. So in 1974–1982 the church was dismantled and reassembled at its present site in Svätý Kríž; a memorial plaque marks the old location. Curiously, the plot where the church stood was never actually flooded. Beneath the old church there was a crypt with five tombs of people who had served the local congregation. The church was declared a cultural monument as early as 1963, long before the move.

What to see

  • the Baroque high altar of 1693 with a painting of the Transfiguration, which comes from the old church, and the pulpit — both by the Kežmarok woodcarver Ján Lerch;
  • the organ of 1754 from the workshop of Martin Podkonický, restored in the 1980s;
  • two-tier galleries decorated with ornaments, figures of saints and biblical scenes;
  • portraits of Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon, the family plaque of the church's former patrons, the Plátthy family, and a Venetian-glass chandelier.

Sisters of the congregation guide visitors, and a short history of the church can be heard in audio recordings in several languages, including Polish and English.
