Vernissage Craft and Souvenir Market, Lviv

Lviv, Lviv region, Ukraine

Vernissage is Lviv's best-known craft and souvenir market, where for several decades traders have sold embroidered shirts, towels, ceramics, woodcarving, paintings and old curiosities in the open air. Rows of stalls line Vicheva Square between Lesi Ukrainky and Teatralna streets, next to the Maria Zankovetska Theatre — a five-minute walk from Rynok Square and Svobody Avenue. For many visitors a stroll through Vernissage is as much a part of a Lviv trip as coffee in the old town: you can browse at leisure, chat with the sellers and pick a gift you won't find in the shops around the Town Hall.

What the market is and why it is worth a visit

Vernissage began as a place where artists and craftspeople could show their work without middlemen, and over time it grew into a large craft and souvenir bazaar. Today it is smaller than in its heyday: some stalls have gone, and alongside handmade pieces you will also see ordinary factory-made souvenirs. Still, this is where you can most easily see the variety of Ukrainian folk art in half an hour — from Hutsul and Boyko motifs to Lviv watercolours. Reviews on Google Maps (4.3 from more than 3,300 ratings) praise the "open-air museum" atmosphere and advise negotiating prices.

What to buy at Vernissage

  • Embroidery and textiles — hand- and machine-embroidered shirts and blouses, ritual towels (rushnyky), napkins, tablecloths and woven belts.
  • Ceramics — painted bowls, jugs, mugs and candlesticks, some in the Kosiv and Opishnia styles.
  • Wood — carved boxes, plates, spoon racks, wooden Easter eggs, toys and kitchenware.
  • Jewellery — beaded gerdany and sylianky necklaces, coral beads, brooches, leather bracelets and glass pieces by local makers.
  • Paintings and prints — Lviv views, icons, miniatures and postcards.
  • Antiques — coins, badges, books, vintage tableware and household objects: part of the market feels like a flea market.

How to bargain and what to look out for

Prices at Vernissage are negotiable, so politely asking for a discount is normal, especially if you buy several items. Before paying for "handmade", check the back of the embroidery: hand stitching is slightly uneven and you can see knots and thread changes on the reverse. Ask who made the piece and where — makers are happy to talk about technique, ornament and the region a pattern comes from. Cash in hryvnias is the safest option, although some sellers accept cards or bank transfers. Ask for careful wrapping of towels or ceramics if you are travelling on by train or plane.

Practical information

Address: Vicheva Square, between Lesi Ukrainky and Teatralna streets, Lviv. Hours: according to Google Maps, Mon–Fri 8:00–20:00 and Sat–Sun 8:00–18:00; most sellers are there around midday, and in winter or rain some stalls may stay closed. Entry is free. The market has no official website or single phone number — it is a collection of independent sellers.

Getting there: from Rynok Square walk north along Teatralna Street (5 minutes), or from Svobody Avenue along Lesi Ukrainky Street. Trams run from the railway station to the city centre, and from there it is a few minutes on foot. If you come by car, use paid car parks outside the pedestrian zone. A visit is easy to combine with a walk through the old town, as the market sits right in the centre, on the way from Rynok Square to the Powder Tower.
