Royal Brewery (Korolivska Pyvovarnia) is a beer restaurant with its own small brewery in the very heart of old Lviv, at 9 Staroievreiska Street, with a second entrance from 18 Rynok Square. Open since the early 2010s, it has long been a natural stop for anyone who wants beer brewed on the spot rather than shipped from a factory. The brewing equipment is part of the décor, so you can see where the beer is made right from your table.
The royal collection of fresh beer
The brewery makes five beers, each named after a royal virtue — hence the “royal collection”:
- Beer of Truth — a pale barley pilsner (4.7%) with a soft malty body and a delicate hop bitterness in the finish.
- Beer of Plenty — a Bavarian-style pale wheat beer (4.5%), sweet-and-sour with low bitterness and aromas of spice, banana and green apple.
- Beer of Power — a dark smoked beer (5.2%) to a 1903 recipe, from the time when Bavarian malt was dried over fruit-wood and oak smoke; malty and smoky at once.
- Beer of Strength — a black double bock (6.2%) with rich malt, caramel softness and the bite of roasted malt.
- Beer of Courage — an amber India pale ale (7.3%) with plenty of hops.
The best approach is to order several in small glasses or as a tasting set and follow the taste from a light pilsner to a smoky, strong bock. Do try the smoked beer — it is rarely brewed in Ukraine.
Below is a sample of menu prices; please check current prices at the restaurant.
Pairing beer with food
The light pilsner and the wheat beer are refreshing after a walk around town and go well with salads, fish and pizza. The smoked Beer of Power opens up with roast meat, sausages and cheese, while the strong double bock suits hearty meat platters or dessert. The hoppy IPA is best with spicy snacks. The bar list also features house-made infusions to old recipes — lemon, horseradish, mead, cherry and raspberry.
Food and atmosphere
The kitchen serves meat platters with roast meats and sausages, pickled vegetables, fish, pizza and burgers, and the bar has infused spirits, cocktails and a wine list. A spacious arched hall with chandeliers, a summer street terrace and big screens make Royal Brewery a popular place to watch football, as well as for banquets and large groups.
