Museum "Heritage Center of the Vygoda Narrow Gauge Railway" Vygoda

In Ukraine, a unique Museum "Heritage Center of the Vygoda Narrow Gauge Railway" has opened in the village of Vygoda in the Dolyna district. Visitors are introduced to the history of the region, particularly the timber processing mill, and learn about the life of the ethnic Boykos, their culture, and traditions. The interactive exhibition showcases the natural features of the Carpathian region and the mountain ecosystem. The interpretation center began its work in April 2016 and is located in the oldest building – the former estate of Leopold Popper von Podhragy.

The establishment was prepared for opening over 2 years. The dilapidated residence of the Austrian baron was restored and transformed into a modern museum with interactive abstractions. This is the only such center in Ukraine. Created with the support of the European Union as part of the "Carpathian Narrow Gauge Railways" initiative, it has developed infrastructure over the years, becoming a visitor center for the region and serving as a tourist crossroads. Plus, the mountains are within easy reach, the Mizunka River with waterfalls, and mineral springs.

In the center of the main hall stands a rare steam locomotive that once served in the woodworking industry. Here, there is also a model of the Vygoda narrow gauge railway, power supply chain structures, samples of tree trunks, and many other interesting exhibits. Additionally, the exhibition presents the cultural aspect of the area, ethnographic achievements, and items created by folk craftsmen. Everyone can obtain all necessary tourist information. The establishment has opened a natural science school for children and teenagers.

The Museum "Heritage Center of the Vygoda Narrow Gauge Railway" looks both ancient and modern. Indeed, it is the oldest building in the village of Vygoda, a monument from 1885, the former residence of the Austrian baron Leopold Popper von Podhragy, the owner of local forests, founder of the first Vygoda mill (sawmill), and the first narrow gauge railway in the Carpathians.

The railway was built along the Svicha and Mizunka rivers deep into the mountains in 1890 – to cut and transport timber. Initially, horses pulled the wagons and platforms, later replaced by a steam locomotive.

Before the start of World War I, it was the Popper family estate – the father's woodworking business was taken over by his son Alexander after his death. In Vygoda, at the beginning of the 20th century, there was a factory that produced wooden blanks for musical instruments – the products were distributed throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire and beyond. The Polish era changed everything – the estate first became the headquarters for the military, and later the office of one of the companies that also cut and processed timber on the former Popper facilities.

During the Soviet era after World War II, the building was used as a village club, and then it was completely closed. In the mid-2000s, it was almost in ruins. The second life of the monument was given by the opening in 2015 of the first historical and natural heritage center in Ukraine. Now it is a museum, visitor center, and conference hall under one roof. For tourists, there are restrooms, showers, lockers to leave backpacks or outerwear. A separate relaxation area with a coffee machine and a collection of Carpathian teas. Free internet access.

In the main hall, where the reception is located, local products are presented – teas and gingerbread, souvenirs and handmade wooden jewelry, dolls, folk musical instruments, and toys. In a separate box – wooden swords and axes, modern bats. "There is a buyer for every item," smiles the administrator. She offers us a sopilka – unlike the products from the souvenir markets of Hutsulshchyna, this one sounds melodious.

One wing of the building is dedicated to the museum. It has four sections and a cinema hall. The film is part of the tour. A half-hour film specially created for the Heritage Center tells the story of Vygoda – from prehistoric times and the emergence of the Carpathians. The film introduces the world of local residents – Boykos, telling about the charm of their simple life in the heart of the Western Gorgans, about preserved culture and traditions. It is voiced in five languages – Ukrainian, English, Polish, Russian, and German. "It is important to know this land to feel at home on it," the guide accompanies the beginning of the film screening.

The exhibition in the museum is original and in many ways unexpected. Interactive – the exhibits not only show something or tell about something, but do so in the form of games, tasks that require finding answers, and interacting with them. The halls, according to their themes, also differ in lighting and resonate with historical and natural monuments that can be seen from the "Carpathian Tram". For example, the relict Shirkovets swamp is presented here as the "Fairy Swamp," where you can open little windows and find "fairy" plants from the Red Book.

The Museum "Heritage Center of the Vygoda Narrow Gauge Railway" is located in the urban-type settlement of Vygoda at Danila Halytsky Street, 66. The establishment is located next to the R21 highway, making it easily visible from the road. You can reach the settlement by electric train or by train, and there is a railway station in the village.

Working hours: from Wednesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 18:00, on Sunday – until 17:00. Lunch – from 12:00 to 13:00. Monday and Tuesday are days off.

Ticket prices: for adults - 80 UAH. For children (6-14 years) - 45 UAH. For students - 50 UAH, for groups (from 15 people) - 70 UAH (adults), 40 UAH (children), "Family" - 150-180 UAH. For children under 5 years, people with disabilities, ATO participants - free of charge.

This is currently the only place in Vygoda where tourists are welcomed without prior phone calls. Other attractions, including the "Carpathian Tram," operate only when enough tourists gather. If you want to go with your family, you should be prepared to join a tourist group. Or arrange for individual admission. It is better to call a few days in advance.

The "Carpathian Tram" in Vygoda is sought along the tracks – they cross the central road. A landmark is the monument to the steam locomotive and flags on the masts. The wind flutters the flags of Ukraine, the EU, and the local woodworking enterprise that restored the narrow gauge railway and launched the train.
