The meadow of Čergov's Minčol, the highest peak of the Čergov mountains

Minčol (1157 m), Čergov – Kyjov / Kamenica / Livovská Huta (okresy Stará Ľubovňa, Sabinov, Bardejov), NPR Čergovský Minčol, Slovakia

Čergov's Minčol (Minčol, 1,157 m) is the highest summit of the Čergov mountains in eastern Slovakia, where the districts of Bardejov, Sabinov and Stará Ľubovňa of the Prešov Region meet. Its top is covered by a broad mountain meadow, and a grassy crest runs from the summit south-east to the neighbouring top of Lazy. The main European watershed crosses the summit: streams from the northern slopes flow to the Baltic Sea, those from the southern slopes to the Black Sea, and on the eastern slope rises the 130-km-long river Topľa. Minčol has a prominence of 567 m – 21st among the mountains of Slovakia.

The name itself speaks of a pastoral past. "Minčol" arrived with the Wallachian colonisation: it comes from the Wallachian word "muncel", meaning a hill or the top of a mountain; dozens of peaks in the Ukrainian Carpathians bear the same name in various forms – Menchul, Menchil, Minchol. In Slovakia the name appears in documents as early as 1563, and Čergov's Minčol itself is mentioned as "Gr. Menschul" in 1771. The grassy meadows on the summit and along the crest to Lazy are, according to Polish reference works, the remains of old shepherds' hale, now heavily overgrown with bilberry. Since the flocks disappeared, the summit area has been protected by the Čergovský Minčol National Nature Reserve (1986, 171 ha, the strictest, 5th degree of protection), which preserves the forest communities of the highest parts of Čergov and typical Carpathian mountain flora with East Carpathian elements. 277 taxa of higher plants have been recorded on its mountain meadows, 15 of them on the Slovak Red List.

What to see and do

  • The pylon and the double signpost. On the summit stands a reinforced-concrete pylon built in 1931–1935 as one of the seventeen first-order points of the Czechoslovak triangulation network, bearing the coats of arms of Bardejov, Stará Ľubovňa, Prešov and Sabinov; next to it is an unusual double hiking signpost with a summit book.
  • The panorama from the fore-summit. Trees partly block the very top, so the widest view is from the fore-summit 500 m to the south-east, where a large wooden cross was raised in 1995 to mark the visit of John Paul II. From here you see the ridges of Čergov, the Ľubovňa basin with Ľubovňa Castle, the Pieniny with Tri koruny, the Polish Beskids and, in good visibility, the High Tatras (55 km), Kráľova hoľa in the Low Tatras, Babia hora, Wielka Rawka in the Bieszczady and even the Ukrainian polonyny more than 150 km away.
  • Bilberry meadows. In summer the summit meadow is green with bilberry, in June the meadows flower, and in autumn they turn russet.

How to get there

Minčol is a calm mountain of moderate difficulty, reached by KST-marked paths from practically every side; you cannot drive to the summit. According to the boards of the hiking signpost on the summit (photo from 2016), descent times are: on the yellow trail to Livovská Huta (bus stop, 660 m) – 1 h 20 min, on the blue trail to Kyjov – 1 h 35 min and to Pusté Pole station – 2 h, on the green trail to Kamenica (Podhradie) – 2 h 35 min; on the red E3 trail along the Čergov ridge – 27 min to Lazy, 2 h 30 min to Sedlo Priehyby and 6 h to Sedlo Čergov. The ascent takes a little longer. The shortest way is from Livovská Huta; about 15 minutes from the Lazy signpost on the green path stands the shelter below Minčol (1,010 m) – usually locked, but with a bivouac at the back open all year. The hike is quite manageable with school-age children; the paths are not suitable for prams.

Season and safety

You can go all year: in winter the summit is snowy and often covered in hoarfrost, so good boots and warm clothes are needed, and in fog it is easy to lose the way on the open crest. In the national nature reserve it is forbidden to leave the marked hiking and educational trails, light fires, pitch tents, leave litter, pick plants and their fruits, catch animals or disturb the peace. Mountain Rescue Service – 18 300, general emergency number – 112. Information as of October 2026.

The pastoral tradition of the area lives on at Farma Kamenica — Family Sheep Farm and Cheese Dairy in Šariš below the mountain; from the summit you can see Ľubovňa Castle, and across the border in the Low Beskids the summit of Lackowa.
