Carpathian markets and fairs
Market day in a Carpathian town is an adventure in itself. At the Kosiv bazaar artisans sell lizhnyk blankets, ceramics and embroidery; in Yaremche, by the Probiy waterfall, stalls offer souvenirs, bryndza and honey; in Kolomyia people come for embroidered shirts; and in Verkhovyna and Kuty farmers from the whole area gather at the market. You can buy straight from the maker — and haggle a little.
Besides the weekly markets, the Carpathians host fairs and festivals: cheese and wine festivals, Hutsul fairs and seasonal craft fairs. They are a good chance to see folk costumes, listen to music and taste local food.
Tip: most markets trade in the morning, and the widest choice is on market day before noon. Bring cash, check that an item is really handmade and confirm the market days in advance — they may change with the season and holidays.
