Mariánska hora (Marian Hill)
Mariánska hora (Marian Hill; Hungarian Máriahegy) is a hill on the southern edge of the Levoča Hills, about 2 km north of the centre of the town of Levoča in eastern Slovakia. According to Slovak sources and Wikidata it is 760.5 m high; English Wikipedia and OpenStreetMap give about 781 m. The hill lies where the Levoča Hills meet the Hornád basin, directly above the town, with the village of Uloža to the east and Dlhé Stráže and Hradisko to the west. Below the summit stands the Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Slovakia, so the hill is known above all as a shrine rather than as a hiking summit.
How to get there / routes
- Blue: from Levoča in the south, or from Levočská Dolina in the north via the Kúty junction — to the basilica below the summit.
- Red: from the east from the village of Uloža via the Kúty junction.
- A road from Levoča via Rúrová and Druhá lúka also leads to the basilica.
The Slovak section of the Camino de Santiago (stage Spišské Podhradie – Levoča), the Slovak Marian Way and the international route I23 also pass the hill. The climb from town is short and easy, so it combines well with a walk through Levoča’s historic centre.
What you can see from the summit
The summit itself is wooded, but next to the basilica a large meadow offers a limited view. From there you see Levoča and its surroundings, the Hornád basin, the nearby Levoča Hills, the Volovské vrchy, the Slovak Paradise and the eastern Low Tatras.
Nature and history
West of Mariánska hora rise Brezová (948 m) and Ostrá hora (933 m), to the north Krížový vrch (1,081 m) and Holý vrch (1,088 m), and to the east Zimná hôrka and Krúžok. The western part of the hill drains via the Levočský potok and the eastern slopes via its tributary, the Krížny potok — all in the Hornád basin.
The site is thought to have served as a refuge for Levoča’s townsfolk during the Mongol invasion of the 13th century. A chapel has stood here since at least then; chronicles mention it in 1247, and repairs are recorded in 1311 and 1322. In 1470 the chapel was enlarged — this is how it appears on Master Paul of Levoča’s altar in the Basilica of St James. According to tradition, shepherds saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary near the church in 1673. A Baroque church of 1766 declined after Emperor Joseph II banned pilgrimages in 1787.
The foundation stone of the present church, designed by the architect Anton Müller, was laid in 1903; construction dragged on, partly because the new tower collapsed in 1908. In 1984 Pope John Paul II raised the church to a minor basilica, and on 3 July 1995 he visited the hill himself, when about 650,000 pilgrims gathered. The annual pilgrimage around 2 July, the Feast of the Visitation, still draws huge crowds. In 2005 Levoča and Mariánska hora joined the European Association of Marian Pilgrimage Sites.
Safety, season and rules
The routes are easy and open all year. During the big pilgrimages in early July the hill is very crowded — plan ahead and respect the services. Emergency number 112; in the Slovak mountains the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) also operates: 18 300 (+421 18 300).
