Dubovský & Grančič Winery, Svätý Jur: tastings and sekt

Zuby 293, 900 21 Svätý Jur, Slovakia

From sixty ares to “Winemaker of the Year”

Svätý Jur is an old wine town on the southern slopes of the Little Carpathians, just beyond the Bratislava city limits. Its vineyards have a thousand-year history: according to the winemakers, sites such as Nová Hora, Turky, Gelnár and Panciere have been cultivated without interruption for more than a thousand years. The family winery Dubovský & Grančič grew out of them. Its founders knew each other since childhood, but wine brought them together only as adults.

In 2003 the friends started farming their first roughly 60 ares of vineyards and made 1,200 litres of wine — and their Müller-Thurgau immediately became champion of the Svätý Jur wine show. The first label followed in 2005; in 2012 their Cabernet Sauvignon rosé won the title of champion of the National Wine Salon of Slovakia, and in 2013 the winery moved to new premises on Zuby street. Twice — in 2014 and 2018 — the Little Carpathian Wine Route named it “Winemaker of the Year”. Since then the owners have planted almost 4 hectares of new vineyards and revived old ones, and in 2017 opened a new barrique cellar.

Why go

  • A tasting with a cellar tour. In the 45-seat tasting room the winemaker or a sommelier presents the wines; every tasting includes a guided look at the cellar. English is possible.
  • A barbecue evening in the vineyard. For groups the winemakers prepare a grill spot in the Gelnár vineyard with a panorama of the Svätý Jur slopes — you bring the good mood, they bring the wine and basic service.
  • Traditional-method sekt. The first bottle-fermented sparkling wine was bottled in 2014 and released in 2016.

What to taste and buy

Svätý Jur’s calling card is Riesling from Nová Hora and Welschriesling from Turky; also worth trying are the rare local Pesecká leánka from Gelnár, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Noir. The premium line bears the name of the town’s patron — St. George; there is also a Riesling Extra Brut sekt, Samo cider, grape juice and wines in magnum bottles. Tastings come with a light snack: two cheeses, prosciutto, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and bread.

For groups (minimum 10 portions of one dish) the winery also serves hot food at official list prices: duck liver pâté with port reduction €8.30, a whole roast duck for 4–5 people €93, lokše (thin potato flatbreads) €3, braised red cabbage €3.20, wild boar in red wine with pickles €19.50, seasonal dessert €4.50 and a welcome drink €3.60. They also help choose wedding wine.
