Juran z Modry winery: tastings in a Modra wine shop

Štúrova 95, 900 01 Modra, Slovakia

Family wine from the Modra slopes

Modra is one of the main wine towns of the Little Carpathians: every other courtyard has its own cellar, and rows of vines climb the slopes above the town. The Juran z Modry winery is a small family estate led by winemaker Peter Juran. In his own words, the main goal is to preserve and develop the family’s winegrowing and winemaking tradition for the next generation.

The family farms about five hectares, exclusively in the Modra winegrowing district. The names of the plots read like a map of the area: Lorencár, Štampoch, Noviny, Hliny and Trávniky — the highest of them, right at the foot of the mountains. Different soils and altitudes give the wines different characters, and the winery likes to talk about it during tastings.

Its best-known success is the 2022 Moravian Muscat (Muškát moravský), which became champion of Slovakia’s National Wine Salon in its category of dry and off-dry white wines. The Jurans are also members of the Víno z Modry association, which brings together local winemakers.

Why go

  • Wine shop. A bright wine shop with a terrace on Štúrova street always pours wines from the current range by the glass, and you can taste them without a reservation, including at weekends.
  • Tasting packages. For groups of six or more there is a small tasting (5 wines with cheese snacks), a large one (8 wines with meats and cheeses) and a vertical one: six archive Grüner Veltliners and Rieslings from different vintages with duck pâté, sourdough bread and cheeses. A vertical is a rare chance to taste how a wine changes over the years.
  • Wine workshop. An interactive tasting for groups (team building, family celebrations); depending on the date and weather it can move out into the vineyard.

What to taste and buy

Try the Grüner Veltliner (Veltlínske zelené) from the Štampoch plot, the Riesling and, of course, the Moravian Muscat. Besides its own wines, the shop sells wines of other Víno z Modry members at their own prices, and you can taste archive wines that have long sold out elsewhere.
