Sniatyn is a district center in Pokuttya in the southeast of Ivano-FrankivskOblast, 92 km from Ivano-Frankivsk, on the left bank of the Prut River, on the border with Bukovyna. The Lviv-Chernivtsi railway line runs 5 km south of the town.
The first historical mention of Sniatyn dates back to 1158 in the Ipatiev Chronicle. The name of the city comes from the name of its owner, voivode Kostiantyn (Kosniatyn) Sirooslavovych, a boyar at the court of Galician Prince Yaroslav Osmomysl.
In 1448, the town received Magdeburg rights and gradually turned into an important trade center with annual fairs. Sniatyn was located on the border with Moldova, so the main customs office operated on this route. The development of crafts was facilitated by the Armenians who began to settle the town in 1628, and the development of agriculture was facilitated by the Germans who arrived from Bavaria, Baden, Württemberg, and Nassau in 1777-1787. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Sniatyn repeatedly suffered from Tatar raids.
