Lubogoszcz

968 m Lubogoszcz, Kasinka Mała

Lubogoszcz (Górale dialect: Libogosc) is a prominent 968 m summit in the Island Beskids (Beskid Wyspowy) in southern Lesser Poland. The mountain stands as a separate "island" between Szczebel, Śnieżnica, Wierzbanowska Góra and the Czarny Dział ridge, cut off from them by the deep valleys of the Raba, the Mszanka and the Kasinianka and Słomka streams. It towers over the town of Mszana Dolna and the villages of Kasinka Mała and Kasina Wielka and lies entirely within Mszana Dolna commune. According to Polish Wikipedia and Wikidata its prominence is 423 m.

The long ridge of Lubogoszcz has three tops: the western one (Zapadliska, 766 m), the middle one (Lubogoszcz Zachodni, 953 m) and the eastern, highest one (968 m); the ridge between the middle and eastern tops is called Kozia Bródka. Two small hills on the Kasinka Mała side, Goron (588 m) and Gródek (533 m), also belong to the massif.

How to get there / trails

Three marked trails lead to the summit (according to Polish Wikipedia):

  • the red Little Beskid Trail: Kasina Wielka – Lubogoszcz – Mszana Dolna, about 3 h 35 min (to the road in Kasina Wielka), 610 m of total ascent;
  • green — from Mszana Dolna, about 2 h up (1 h 30 min down), 560 m of ascent; the Podchodna clearing lies near it on the southern slope;
  • black — from Kasinka Mała to the junction with the red trail, about 2 h (1 h 30 min down), 560 m of ascent.

The Main Trail of the Island Beskids also crosses the summit. On the western slope, in the Kopieniec hamlet of Kasinka Mała, the "Lubogoszcz" training and holiday centre, built in 1924, stands by the black trail at about 580–590 m.

What you can see from the summit

Above 500–550 m the mountain is completely forested. A large clearing once lay by the eastern top and a wooden observation tower stood on the summit, but the clearing has become overgrown and the tower rotted and collapsed. Today views open only from the lower parts of the trails and from windthrow gaps — towards the neighbouring "islands" of the Beskid Wyspowy and the Raba and Mszanka valleys.

Nature and history

The mountain is built of Carpathian flysch and is affected by the landslides typical of the Carpathians. One of them created the water-filled landslide niche Żabie Oko on the western slope; there are rock outcrops on the eastern slopes, and the folk name Zapadliska is probably also linked to landslides. In the eastern part lies another pond, Morskie Oko: it was once larger and used for bathing, but is now a marsh that is filling in. Local people say there are 99 springs on the mountain; before the Second World War small brine springs were also found, but their exploitation proved unprofitable.

The forest on Lubogoszcz is considered valuable: seeds of its conifers are collected for the central seed bank. It hosts one of only two sites in the whole Beskid Wyspowy of the hart's-tongue fern (Asplenium scolopendrium), discovered in 2003, with about 500 plants. Since 2026 the north-eastern part of the summit has been protected as a nature reserve, and the western part lies in the Lubogoszcz Natura 2000 site.

The ridge was once treeless, with mountain pastures. Many legends of devils, water spirits, weather spirits and boginki are linked with the mountain. On the northern slopes above Kasina Wielka there is a place called Zamczysko or Gródek: the name suggests an old hillfort, but archaeological research has not confirmed it.

Safety, season and rules

Lubogoszcz can be climbed all year and has no difficult sections, but the climbs are fairly steep and long, and the forested ridge without views makes navigation harder in fog. In winter there is snow. In the reserve on the north-eastern slopes keep to marked trails. Mountain rescue in the Beskids is provided by GOPR: 985 or +48 601 100 300, plus the general emergency number 112.
