Winnica Nowizny, Połom Mały: wine from an 1891 cellar

Połom Mały 60, 32-862 Porąbka Iwkowska, Poland

Winnica Nowizny is a family farm in the village of Połom Mały, Iwkowa municipality, in the Rożnów Foothills of Lesser Poland, north of Nowy Sącz and Lake Rożnów. The vineyard was planted in 2005 on a sunny south-west-facing slope with views of the Island Beskids (Beskid Wyspowy) and the Sącz Beskids. Today it covers one and a half hectares with seven varieties, and the family that runs it has been making wine for over twenty years. The owners describe it as an enotourism farm where love of vines meets hospitality.

The place owes its special character to an old cellar dating from 1891. It was first built in the neighbouring village of Wytrzyszczka, where for many years it served as a farm building. In 2012 it was moved to the vineyard and given a new life: today it stores the wine and hosts tastings and guests.

Why go

  • A cellar tasting of wines and regional products in the historic 1891 building.
  • A walk through the vineyard with the story of its terroir: how the varieties grow on the foothill slope and why grapes ripen here.
  • Fallow deer and a rope park. Fallow deer live on the farm and can be fed, and children aged 3–10 have a rope course with a zip line, so it suits a family visit.
  • The view and home cooking. The terrace and the wooden hall look out over the mountains; guests praise the home-made pierogi, including ones with game and with plums.

What to taste and buy

The vineyard makes six wines: the dry white Bukowiec from Bianca, fresh and citrusy with apple and white pepper notes; Szpilówka from Solaris in two versions, dry (full, with ripe pear and apricot) and semi-sweet (peach, honey and ripe apple); a semi-sweet Rosé from Cabernet Cortis (strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant); and the dry red Marszałek from Maréchal Foch, with forest berries, cherry and spice. Note that Nowizny wines are sold only at the vineyard, all year round; you will not find them in shops. So if one of them wins you over at the tasting, take a few bottles with you. Drivers can combine a walk in the vines and lunch, and taste the wine at home. Compare the dry and semi-sweet Szpilówka made from the same grape: it is the best way to see how winemaking shapes a wine.
