Lúčky — a spa beneath Veľký Choč

Lúčky Spa (Kúpele Lúčky) lies in a quiet valley beneath the Choč Mountains, in the village of Lúčky near Ružomberok. It is a real medical spa rather than just a water park: patients are treated here on a doctor's referral, and the AQUA-VITAL Park thermal complex is open to anyone. The spa is best known for treating women's diseases and infertility, but it is licensed for other fields as well.

An old Liptov legend tells how the spa began: a shepherd noticed that a sick sheep recovered after he dipped its legs several times into a hot spring beneath Malý Choč. Word spread around, and the lords of Likava Castle had the spring enclosed so that sick people could bathe in it. In 2012 the spa celebrated 300 years since its first written mention; activity around the springs grew noticeably around 1760.

The main natural treasure is the Valentína spring: medium-mineralised sulphate-bicarbonate healing water at about 32 °C at the outlet. The 97 m borehole was drilled in 1966–1967 and modernised by the spa in 2025. The water is drunk during drinking cures and used for baths and pools.

What to see and do

  • Outdoor recreational pool 25 × 14 m, 1.2 m deep, water at 28–32 °C, with air loungers, a counter-current, massage jets and underwater lighting.
  • Outdoor sitting pool with mineral water at 36–38 °C.
  • Indoor mineral pool with healing water at 33 °C and 35 °C.
  • Vital World — Finnish and menthol saunas, a Roman bath, a Kneipp bath, a tepidarium and various showers; outside, a Finnish sauna, a cooling pool and an open-air whirlpool. There is a children's playground near the pools.
  • Spa treatments for guests and visitors: massages, hydrotherapy, heat, electro- and light therapy, inhalations, a balneo centre and a salt cave.

The State Spa Commission has licensed Lúčky to treat oncological, gynaecological and neurological diseases, as well as disorders of the digestive system, metabolism, respiratory tract and musculoskeletal system. Treatment covered by health insurance requires a doctor's referral.

Practical information

Getting there. A car is the most convenient option: Lúčky is a few kilometres from the Bešeňová water park, and the nearest towns are Ružomberok and Liptovský Mikuláš. The spa has its own hotels, so you can stay for several days.

AQUA-VITAL Park hours (as of October 2026, all year): outdoor pools Monday–Friday 12:00–19:45, weekends and holidays 10:00–19:45; Vital World daily 12:00–19:45; indoor pool 15:00–20:00 (last entry 19:00). On 26–27 October 2026 the outdoor pools are closed for planned maintenance.

Prices (price list from 1 January 2026, ticket office): outdoor pools for 2 hours €19 for adults, €14 for children aged 3–14, people over 60 and people with disabilities; family ticket (2 adults + up to 3 children) €58; indoor pool for 1 hour €13 / €9.40; Vital World for 2 hours €19 / €14; "outdoor pools + saunas" package for 4 hours €36 / €26. Each started half-hour over the limit costs €7 / €5. Children under 3 use the outdoor pools and saunas free of charge.

Good to know. The mineral pool is not recommended for children; children aged 3–14 may use Vital World only from 12:00 to 16:00 and the indoor pool only at weekends and on holidays. Lúčky suits those looking for peace and healing water rather than noisy slides.

From the spa a red-marked trail through Jastrabia dolina leads up Veľký Choč (about 3.5 hours, 1,038 m of ascent). Nearby are the ruins of Likava Castle, the Bešeňová water park and the village of Vlkolínec.

From Lviv it is faster through Poland: M-10 → Krakovets – Korczowa → A4 to Kraków → S7/DK7 to the Chyżne – Trstená border → R3 and I/59 via Dolný Kubín to Ružomberok: ≈482 km, ≈6 h 15 min (via Uzhok and Ubľa ≈500 km, ≈7 h 30 min). The D1 requires an e-vignette (eznamka.sk).
