Barvy Karpat Excursions, Slavske

Slavske, Lviv region, Ukraine

Barvy Karpat («Colours of the Carpathians») is a small local excursion organiser based in Slavske, one of the best-known resorts of the Skole Beskids. It is a practical option if you are staying in Slavske for a few days and want to see more than the nearby peaks — Transcarpathian waterfalls, Lake Synevyr, the cliff fortress of Tustan or the medieval castle in Mukachevo — without planning transport yourself.

Routes on offer

According to the tourist catalogue listing, the trips follow pre-designed routes that can be combined:

  • Main Carpathian watershed — Lake Vita — Shypit Waterfall. A drive across the main ridge into Transcarpathia to one of the region's most popular waterfalls near Pylypets.
  • Shypit + Lake Synevyr. The largest mountain lake in the Ukrainian Carpathians, the brown bear rehabilitation centre and mineral springs.
  • Off-road trip by 4×4 for those who want to see the mountains from open ridges rather than from a bus window.
  • Synevyr and Kolochava — an extended version with a visit to the well-known Transcarpathian village.
  • Kamianka Waterfall — Tustan fortress. A cascading waterfall near Skole and the remains of a medieval cliff fortress in Urych.
  • Kamianka Waterfall — Dovbush Rocks — Hoshiv Monastery. Outlaw legends at Bubnyshche and one of the most revered shrines of the Prykarpattia region.
  • Palanok Castle in Mukachevo and thermal pools in Kosyno or Berehove — a day of rest after hiking.

Who it suits

The format suits families, small groups of friends and anyone holidaying in Slavske in winter or summer. In winter, when the slopes of Trostian are hit by a blizzard or a thaw, a day trip to thermal waters or castles is a pleasant alternative to skiing. In summer and autumn the waterfall and Synevyr routes work best — the drive over the passes is an excursion in itself.

Tips before you go

Transcarpathian routes cross mountain passes, so allow 8–10 hours for a day on the road. Bring comfortable footwear for the waterfall paths, a rain jacket and warm layers even in summer: Synevyr and Shypit are noticeably cooler than the valley. Entry to national parks, castles and thermal complexes is usually paid separately, so check what the price includes and carry some cash.
