Viktoria Art Gallery, Slavske

Slavske, Lviv region, Ukraine

The Viktoria Art Gallery in Slavske is a small family gallery and studio where art lives not behind glass but in the homely atmosphere of a wooden house. It occupies the family estate of scholar, art historian and photographer Volodymyr Feliv-Horbatiuk, close to Slavske railway station. Drop in if you want to see the Carpathians through the eyes of local painters – and pick up a brush yourself.

What to see

The gallery has a permanent display: Carpathian landscapes, flowers and mountain views around Slavske hang on the walls and stand on easels, alongside children's work created in classes. Some paintings were made en plein air in the mountains. The interior is a timber attic room with easels, embroidered cushions and shelves of decorative knick-knacks, so it feels more like visiting an artist at home than a museum hall.

Workshops and creative meetings

  • Painting – a landscape or flowers under an artist's guidance, with tips on composition and colour.
  • Modelling – figurines and simple shapes, a favourite with children.
  • Pysanka decorating – painting Easter eggs with wax and dyes, with an explanation of the symbols in the ornaments.
  • Plein-air sessions – painting outdoors in the mountains around Slavske in the warm season.

Workshops are held for groups of up to 20 people, children included, making it a good option for a family holiday or a school trip. The gallery's sign also mentions stained glass and the framing of embroidery and beadwork. Creative meetings and charity auctions are held from time to time.

Slavske's artistic tradition

For centuries Slavske was a Boyko village where crafts – from woodcarving and weaving to pysanka making – were part of everyday life. In 2024 the Boyko pysanka tradition was added to Ukraine's National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which gives an egg-decorating class here special meaning. The mountain scenery of the Opir valley has long drawn artists to paint outdoors.

Tips before you go

This is a family gallery, so expect a welcoming artists’ home rather than a museum with a ticket desk. Be sure to call before your trip to check that it will be open on your day, which workshops are available and how long they last. For children the easiest format is modelling or gouache painting; adults may prefer a landscape or a pysanka. If you travel as a large group or a school class, book a few days ahead, as groups are limited to twenty participants. If you would like a landscape to remember Slavske by, ask during your visit whether paintings are for sale.

Practical information

  • Address: 37-V O. Stepanivny St, Slavske. From the railway station walk about 90 m to the level crossing and another 80 m to the bridge – the gallery is just beyond it.

  • Entry: by charity ticket.
