A lizhnyk of your own: what the masterclass is

The Kosiv area is one of the main centres of Hutsul lizhnyk weaving, and the best way to understand the craft is to sit at a loom yourself. The Kosiv tourist information centre (the Kosiv.life project) runs a lizhnyk weaving masterclass: guests are picked up in the town centre and taken to one of the local family workshops, where the hostess shows how raw wool turns into a warm, shaggy lizhnyk blanket and lets you weave a small piece of your own.

This is not a museum display but a working workshop: it smells of wool, half-finished pieces sit on the looms, and the secrets of the craft are passed down within the family. After the class you can buy finished items directly from the makers.

What the programme includes

  • Transfer from the tourist information centre to the workshop and back.
  • Workshop tour: from preparing the wool to weaving on a wooden loom.
  • Hands-on part: making your own small piece to take home.
  • A chance to buy lizhnyks, cushions and other woollen goods straight from the makers.

The class lasts about 3 hours. It suits adults and children aged 5+, and no previous skills are needed.

A little about the craft

A lizhnyk is a heavy woollen blanket with a long pile, an essential item in any Hutsul home. It is woven from sheep's wool on a loom and then "fulled" in a valylo — a wooden tub where a stream of cold mountain water compacts the fabric and makes it fluffy. For centuries lizhnyks served as bedding, rugs and part of a bride's dowry. The process is long and laborious, so the craft stays in families: daughters learn from their mothers, and patterns such as diamonds, stripes and "fir trees" become the signature of a particular workshop.

The best-known lizhnyk village nearby is Yavoriv, a short drive from Kosiv. The masterclass in Kosiv is a convenient way to get close to this tradition without travelling far from town.
