Mroźna Cave

Dolina Kościeliska, 34-511 Kościelisko (Tatrzański Park Narodowy; wejście ok. 2 km od wylotu doliny w Kirach), Poland

An underground corridor in the Organy crags

Mroźna Cave is the best-known show cave in the Polish Tatras. It lies on the eastern slope of the Kościeliska Valley, in the Organy massif, about 120 m above the valley floor; the entrance is at roughly 1,100 m. The cave is 773 m long in total, and the visitor route covers about 500 m. It is essentially one long corridor carved by the underground waters of the Kościeliski Stream, with small chambers, steps and narrow clefts.

The cave was discovered in May 1934 by Stefan Zwoliński and Jerzy Zahorski and opened to visitors in 1953, when an artificial northern entrance was cut — it is still used today. For more than half a century Mroźna was the only Tatra cave with electric lighting, but the lights were removed during renovation, and since it reopened in 2023 you can only visit with your own torch. The name means “Frosty”: it is always cold inside, and the white mineral deposits on the walls look like hoarfrost. The cave is also a refuge for bats.

What to see

  • The Great Chamber — the largest hall in the cave, about 25 × 10 m and up to 10 m high.
  • The “Curtain” flowstone — a brown flowstone coating on the left wall just beyond the Great Chamber.
  • Sabała's Pool — the largest body of water in the cave (artificially created).
  • The “Little Garden” (Ogródek) — a cluster of large stalagmites, with a small side chamber holding the finest formations.
  • The Sloping Hall and the Sand Ponds, reached by metal steps.

Practical information

Getting there. The cave is about 2 km from the entrance of the Kościeliska Valley at Kiry (TPN car park, 30 zł, and a bus stop). A black-marked trail leaves the wide valley track just above the Stare Kościeliska meadow, by a wooden footbridge and the Ice Spring. The trail is one-way: the climb to the entrance takes 20–30 minutes, and after the visit you descend by a different path in 10–15 minutes.

Hours and tickets. The cave is open from 26 April to 31 October, daily from 9:00 to 17:00, last entry at 16:30. A ticket costs 11 zł; children under 7 enter free. Buy it online on the TPN website, at the ticket point at the valley entrance or at the cave (cash only there, as there is no mobile signal). The Large Family Card and other TPN exemptions do not apply to the cave. You also need a TPN entry ticket for the valley itself.

What to bring. The route takes 30–40 minutes. The temperature inside is always below 10 °C, the floor is slippery and uneven, there are steps and tight spots, and in places water drips like underground rain. Be sure to bring a torch or headlamp, warm clothes and shoes with a good grip; TPN also recommends a helmet. The route is not suitable for pushchairs. Do not touch the formations, do not write on the walls and stay on the marked route. Dogs, open flames and drones are banned in TPN.

Who it suits. The cave is a good addition to a valley walk for families with school-age children and anyone who does not mind darkness and narrow passages. It is best to plan the visit for the morning to avoid queuing at the entrance on busy weekends.
