Barania Góra

1 220 m Barania Góra, Kamesznica

Barania Góra ("Ram Mountain"; German Widderberg) is a dome-shaped summit in the south-eastern Silesian Beskids, the second-highest in the range after Skrzyczne. Its height is usually given as 1,220 m, though according to Polish Wikipedia that figure (1,219.8 m) refers to the survey mark on the concrete obelisk on the summit, 4.92 m above the ground; the ground at the top lies at about 1,215 m. The mountain stands in the Silesian Voivodeship on the boundary of Cieszyn and Żywiec counties — Cieszyn Silesia and the Żywiec region; the boundaries of the town of Wisła and the village of Kamesznica meet on the summit.

Barania Góra is best known for the sources of the Vistula, Poland's longest river. Two of its three headstreams, the Biała and Czarna Wisełka, rise on the western slopes, while the third, the Malinka, springs on the slope of Malinowska Skała. The slopes are covered with fir-beech forest mixed with ash, sycamore and spruce, with outcrops of thick-bedded Istebna sandstone.

How to get there / routes

The summit is a trail hub crossed by the red Main Beskid Trail (GSB). According to Polish Wikipedia, approximate ascent times are:

  • from the PTTK hut on the Przysłop clearing (900 m) — about 1 h (45 min down);
  • from Wisła Czarne up the Biała Wisełka valley — about 2 h 30 min; up the Czarna Wisełka valley (black trail to the hut, then red) — also about 2 h 30 min;
  • from Kamesznica — about 3 h; from Kubalonka Pass via Stecówka — about 3 h;
  • from Skrzyczne — about 3 h 30 min; from Węgierska Górka — about 4 h 30 min;
  • from Zwardoń — about 6 h (blue trail to the hut, then red).

A nature trail runs through the Czarna and Biała Wisełka valleys, and the themed Habsburg Trail also reaches the summit.

What you can see from the summit

Since windthrow, bark beetle and salvage felling destroyed much of the spruce forest on the eastern and southern slopes, Barania Góra has become an excellent viewpoint. A public steel observation tower on the top gives a panorama of the mountains of three countries — Poland, Czechia and Slovakia. It takes in the Silesian, Little, Maków and Żywiec Beskids with Babia Góra, the Tatras, the Choč Mountains, the Little Fatra, the Strážov Mountains, the Javorníky and the Moravian-Silesian Beskids, and in exceptional visibility even the Jeseníky in the Sudetes. The tower was closed on 26 April 2024 because of its technical condition and reopened after repairs on 12 September 2024.

Nature and history

The 386 ha Barania Góra nature reserve covers the summit area together with the Vistula sources, and the Czarna Wisełka, Biała Wisełka and Malinka streams are also protected in the "Wisła" reserve for the brown trout. Plants rare in Poland include Carpathian Tozzia, Moravian monkshood and nodding willowherb — common in the Sudetes but rare in the Carpathians. Swiss stone pine and dwarf mountain pine were planted in places. There is a weather station on the summit.

The PTTK hut on the Przysłop clearing below Barania Góra occupied a wooden Habsburg hunting lodge from 1925 to 1979 and since 1979 has been housed in a three-storey masonry building.

Safety, season and rules

The mountain is accessible all year. In the reserve keep to the marked trails. Where the slopes have been cleared, the ridge is exposed to wind, and deep snow lies here in winter — a ski lift and runs operate nearby. Do not climb the tower in a thunderstorm. In an emergency call the Beskid group of GOPR on 985 or +48 601 100 300, or 112.
