Żywiec Brewery Museum
The Żywiec Brewery Museum (Muzeum Browaru Żywiec) is one of the largest and most modern brewing museums in Poland, in the town of Żywiec between the Silesian and Żywiec Beskids. The brewery was founded in 1856 by Archduke Albrecht Friedrich Habsburg, a grandson of Emperor Leopold II, and for 93 years it belonged to the Żywiec branch of the Habsburgs. The museum opened in 2006 for the brewery's 150th anniversary in its oldest, historic part — the former lagering cellars where the beer matured; the exhibition covers more than 1,600 m². In 2026 the museum marked its 20th anniversary with a refreshed exhibition and new spaces. It is part of the Industrial Monuments Route of Silesian Voivodeship and since 2010 has been an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).
Brewing in this region goes back more than seven centuries: the town had municipal rights by 1327, and several small breweries worked in the town and at the castle. The Habsburgs' industrial brewery lived through a turbulent 20th century. Its last owner, Archduke Karol Olbracht, considered himself a Pole, was a colonel in the Polish Army and in 1939 refused to sign the German Volksliste, for which he was arrested. During the war the brewery was run by a German administrator, and in spring 1945 the retreating occupiers mined the cellars — the workers cut the cables to the explosives and saved the plant. In 1956 the famous oval label with a pair of dancers in Kraków costume appeared; registered in 1959, it became the first post-war trademark of Polish brewing.
What to see
- Rooms leading through the eras — from medieval town breweries to the Habsburgs, the war, the post-war decades and the present; lots of multimedia and reconstructions.
- Brewing technology — copper brewing vessels, models, laboratory equipment and the cooperage: until the 1880s beer was delivered in wooden barrels by cart, and in winter by sledge, and from 1891 by the brewery's own railway siding.
- Collections of labels, bottles, mugs and advertising, the brewery's postcards from 1899 and beer tokens with the archducal crown, used as an extra reward for workers.
- Busting myths — guides explain, for example, that beer is brewed not from hops but from malt, while hops only add flavour and aroma and act as a natural preservative.
- Optionally, a tour of the modern production brewery (separate ticket; for adults and secondary-school pupils, not accessible for people with disabilities).
Practical information
The museum stands in the Zabłocie district next to the brewery, on Browarna Street. Driving from Bielsko-Biała, take the S1 expressway and leave at the "Browar" exit (the one after the "Żywiec" exit) to avoid crossing the whole town. From Żywiec railway station town buses nos. 1, 5 and 15 take about 10 minutes; on foot it is about 40 minutes. The visit lasts about an hour plus tasting time; visits are by advance booking only. Good news for Ukrainian visitors: besides Polish, English, German and Czech, the audio guide is also available in Ukrainian. Minors may visit only with adults; their ticket includes juice. The museum is accessible for people with disabilities.
Nearby: trails and peaks
From Żywiec our trail Żywiec – Bystra Górna heads into the mountains. In the town centre, visit Żywiec castles: Old Castle, Habsburg Palace and park — the residence of the same Habsburgs who founded the brewery — and a few kilometres away lies Lake Żywiec (Jezioro Żywieckie).
