Archducal Castle Brewery, Cieszyn: 180 years of beer and rock cellars

ul. Dojazdowa 2, 43-400 Cieszyn (wejście na zwiedzanie: ul. Zamkowa 3b), Poland

The Archducal Castle Brewery in Cieszyn (Arcyksiążęcy Browar Zamkowy Cieszyn) is one of the oldest working breweries in Poland and one of the most valuable monuments of technology in the Silesian Foothills. Archduke Charles Louis of Habsburg founded it in 1846: plots were bought on the Castle Hill, the Viennese architect Josef Kornhäusel drew up the design, and the hardest task was cutting lagering cellars into the rock. From the start it brewed pale bottom-fermented beer of the Pilsner type, which needed steady cold and long maturation, provided by the naturally cool underground of the hill. Water came from the Olza river, barley from Moravia and hops from Bohemia.

The Cieszyn brewery became a model for other Habsburg breweries: the founder's son, Archduke Albert Frederick, established the brewery in Żywiec in 1856, and its first brewers came from Cieszyn. Before the First World War Cieszyn produced around 150,000 hectolitres a year, more than Żywiec at the time. In 2026 the brewery celebrates 180 years of continuous work.

Why go

The highlight is a guided tour of the working brewery. The brewery has a cascade layout, so the route follows the natural course of production, from the top floors down to the rock-cut cellars. You will see the main building in its original form, malt lofts with a fine roof truss and a mill over a hundred years old, and the brewhouse with its century-old kettle and Grant's trough, all still in use. Especially impressive are the ice tunnel, the floor maltings and the underground cellars: about 70% of the whole complex lies below ground. A tasting ends the tour. The tour appeals not only to beer lovers: it is a living history of technology and of the region, told through machines that still work and buildings that have barely changed since the mid-19th century.

What to taste and buy

  • Cieszyn Pilsner (4.8%), a classic pale beer “as of old”.
  • Cieszyn Lager and the alcohol-free Lager FREE.
  • Wheat beer, Session IPA and a strong Double IPA (8%).
  • A Baltic-style Porter (9.8%), deep and dessert-like.
  • Mastne, a malty “Polish ale”, Herbowe, a full pale beer, and Koźlak, a bock slowly matured in the historic cellars.
