Slovak Folk Majolica in Modra: pottery tour and painting
Jugs that remember the Habans
Modra is a small wine town on the eastern slopes of the Little Carpathians, half an hour’s drive from Bratislava. Besides wine-growers it has always had potters — historically the most numerous guild in town. Their craft goes back to the Habans, Anabaptist settlers who in the 16th and 17th centuries brought majolica to western Slovakia: earthenware covered with a white tin glaze on which painted decoration glows in bright colours.
In 1883 a pottery workshop with a school was founded in Modra, and the tradition has never been broken since. Today’s Slovak Folk Majolica (Slovenská ľudová majolika) is its direct heir: for more than 140 years pottery has been thrown, fired and painted here by hand. Every piece is painted freehand with a brush, without stencils, so no two plates are the same. Since November 2017 Modra majolica and its ornament have been on Slovakia’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Modra majolica is easy to recognise: flower garlands, vine branches, birds and scenes from vineyard life on a white ground, alongside more restrained “Haban”, blue, multicoloured and green decors. The best-known object is the čutora, a flat ring-shaped wine flask that vineyard workers carried up the slopes.
Why go
- Production tour. Every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00, on the hour, visitors are led through the workshops: from clay preparation and throwing on the wheel to the large kilns and the tables where the painters decorate the ware.
- Your own piece. After the tour you can paint a blank with traditional colours under the guidance of the instructors; the piece is then glazed and fired and handed over later.
- Working with clay. In autumn 2026 the workshop opened a separate clay studio: an hour and a half at the potter’s wheel and hand-building.
- Events. Open-workshop days, a summer majolica symposium and free “Monday workshops” (in November 2026). In 2026, for example, the symposium on 7–11 September was devoted to vineyard motifs, and on the first weekend of October tours and workshops for children and adults were free. Check the news section of the website for the current programme.
What to buy
The shop sells plates, bowls, jugs, teapots, mugs, vases, čutoras and miniature souvenirs. This is handwork, not factory souvenirs, and it is priced accordingly — but a wine jug with Modra painting is one of the best presents you can bring home from the Little Carpathians. Part of the range is also sold online.
