Strečno Castle

Hradná 1, 013 24 Strečno, Slovakia

The castle guarding the gate of the Malá Fatra

Strečno Castle (Hrad Strečno) stands on a 103 m limestone crag above the River Váh, 11 km from Žilina on the road to Martin. Together with the ruins of Starý hrad on the opposite bank it forms the picturesque “gate” of the Strečno Gorge (Strečniansky priesmyk), where the Váh cuts through the ridges of the Malá Fatra. The village of Strečno lies below the castle, which is listed as a national cultural monument of Slovakia and today houses an exhibition of the Považie Museum (Považské múzeum) in Žilina.

Already in the Iron Age the crag carried a settlement of the Púchov culture. The stone castle probably grew here in the first half of the 14th century: the first mention of the Strečno estate dates from 1316 (other sources say 1384). At first it was a small fortress with a square watchtower, a cistern cut into the rock and a residential building; it protected a toll station at the ford across the Váh. Under Barbara of Cilli, wife of King Sigismund of Luxembourg, a Gothic chapel with a star vault was added in the 15th century.

Strečno reached its greatest size in the 17th century, when František Vešeléni (Ferenc Wesselényi) turned it into the most modern fortress of the central Váh valley, with bastions built for artillery. After the anti-Habsburg conspiracy, the fortifications were blown up and demolished on the orders of Emperor Leopold I in 1698. The castle was damaged again in September 1944, during the fighting of the Slovak National Uprising in the gorge. A major reconstruction took place from 1974 to 1995; experts criticise its heavy use of concrete, but it is thanks to it that the ruins are accessible again. In 1994 the Hollywood film Dragonheart was shot here.

The castle is linked with the story of Žofia Bosniaková, Vešeléni’s wife, known for her piety and care for the poor. Decades after her death her body was found intact and moved to the church in Teplička nad Váhom; in 2009 it was destroyed by an arsonist, and in 2012 the restored remains were returned to the castle.

What to see

  • The main tower (bergfried) – the oldest part of the castle, with views of the Váh, the Domašín meander and the Žilina basin.
  • The Gothic chapel and the north palace, where the story of Žofia Bosniaková is told.
  • The museum exhibition with archaeological finds from around Žilina and models of the castle in different periods.
  • Paseka – a reconstructed medieval village below the castle with wooden houses, a bell tower and a playground; free entry.

Practical information

By car from Žilina take road I/18 (E50) towards Martin – 11 km. Leave the car in the car park below the castle; from there it is about 20 minutes up the steps, or about 30 minutes on foot from the village centre. By train you can travel to Nezbudská Lúčka on the opposite bank and cross the Váh by footbridge or by ferry. The climb is steep and not convenient for pushchairs.

A full ticket costs €7, reduced €3.50, family €17.50; children under 6 enter free. In October 2026 the castle is open daily from 10:00 to 15:00 with a break 12:15–12:45; in the main season, according to museum.sk, it is open daily 9:00–17:00, and it is closed from December to March. From June 2026 to May 2028 the museum is reconstructing the castle for a new exhibition, so some rooms may be inaccessible – it is worth phoning before your visit.

Nearby

On the other bank of the Váh you can see the ruins of Starý hrad, reached by a footpath. Half an hour away by car are Terchová, birthplace of Juraj Jánošík, and Vrátna dolina with its cable car to Chleb. The Šútovo waterfall is also close by.
