Personall Kraft Brewpub, Stary Sącz
Personall Kraft is a family-run brewpub in Stary Sącz where the beer is brewed right in the dining hall: the big brewing vessels are visible from the tables. The owners say it all began with a love of Belgian beer, above all Trappist ales. In 2006 they bought their first serious brewing equipment, later developed seven recipes of their own for unpasteurised beers — and that is how the idea of a brewery built on personal experience was born.
The site has a history. The brewery stands where, before the Second World War, the well-known Przystań ("Harbour") restaurant used to be. Stary Sącz lay on an important route, and famous guests stopped here — among them General Bolesław Wieniawa-Długoszowski, Józef Piłsudski's aide-de-camp and perhaps the most colourful figure of interwar Poland. The present brewery building is modern, but the owners consciously continue the hospitable tradition of the Przystań. The beer is made with mountain water and natural ingredients on German equipment from Joh. Albrecht Brautechnik, and the house recipes also use wild hops growing nearby.
What to taste and do
- The house beers. The regular line-up: pale lager Lacher (5.0%, related to Czech pilsners), amber Rauter (5.3%), wheat beer Weisster (5.2%), Tapper ale (6.5%), hoppy American-style Yanker (6.5%, 60 IBU) and the strong dark Monk (8%). The Belgian ale Laszka won third place in the Belgian Ale category of a craft beer competition. The easiest way to try several is a tasting flight of small glasses.
- The taproom on two levels: six seats at the bar, 13 tables on the ground floor and six upstairs; beer on draught or in bottles.
- The restaurant under the same name: starters, main courses and desserts; the menu also has spirits and soft drinks, hot and cold.
- The rooftop terrace — in season a spacious terrace for about 200 people opens; the brewery holds parties here and, for example, its own Oktoberfest.
The beer names are playful, each with its own "character": Monk is a "black monk" opening the door to a world for the chosen few, Yanker a "rebellious cousin from America", and Tapper, as the brewery puts it, understands all your sorrows (a pun on the Polish "żale" and the English "ale"). The owners recommend the restaurant for an evening with family, friends or a partner, so it also works for those who do not drink beer.
