Spišská Sobota and St George's Church

Sobotské námestie 13, 058 01 Poprad-Spišská Sobota, Slovakia

Spišská Sobota is the best-preserved historic quarter of Poprad. It used to be an independent market town and became part of Poprad in 1946. The first written record of the settlement dates from 1256, and it received town privileges in 1271. Sobota lived from crafts and fairs: guilds of shoemakers, bootmakers, tailors and furriers worked here, and in 1567 the town gained the right to hold fairs. From 1412 to 1772 it was, like several other Spiš towns, pledged to the Kingdom of Poland. In 1950 its historic centre was declared an urban heritage reserve.

What to see

The heart of Sobota is the long, spindle-shaped square Sobotské námestie, lined with Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque burghers' houses under steep roofs. These rows of houses make Sobota feel like a small Levoča or Kežmarok, only without the crowds.

  • Church of St George. First mentioned in 1273, it keeps the south wall of the nave and the tower from the late Romanesque building. In 1464 the church was rebuilt in Gothic style under the builder Jorge Steinmetzer, and in 1502–1514 the Chapel of St Anne and the sacristy were added. In 2011 the church received the Slovak "Cultural Monument of the Year" award.
  • The main altar of 1516 from the workshop of Master Paul of Levoča — a late Gothic winged altar with a carved scene of St George fighting the dragon; below it is a Last Supper scene, and the side wings carry twelve painted panels with scenes from the lives of saints.
  • A carved organ from 1662, a Baroque pulpit and modern stained-glass windows by the Poprad artist Marián Čižmárik, made in 2002–2013.
  • The Renaissance bell tower of 1598 by a master from Kežmarok, standing separately next to the church, and the Marian column on the square.
  • The Lutheran church of 1777 in Classicist style at the opposite end of the square.
  • The house where King Matthias Corvinus stayed, marked by a bronze memorial plaque.

From the church a narrow lane between Renaissance houses leads to the old cemetery. A relaxed walk around the square takes about an hour — a calm place for families, older visitors and anyone not planning a mountain hike.

Practical information

Spišská Sobota lies in the north-eastern part of Poprad, less than 2 km from the town centre, so you can walk, drive or take local transport. Poprad is the main rail and bus hub below the High Tatras, which makes Sobota easy to combine with a trip to the mountains or with the road to Kežmarok. The church address is Sobotské námestie 13, Poprad-Spišská Sobota.

The square is open at all times and free of charge. The church is an active parish church, so visits are limited during services. We could not find official opening hours or admission for 2026 — check them with the parish or the Poprad tourist information centre before you go. The best time for a stroll is May to October, when the days are long and you can sit on the square; in winter Sobota is lovely too, especially when lit up in the evening.
