The Hutsul cheres (the word "cheres" comes from the Old Slavic "cers", which translates as "belt" or "waist") is a wide belt made of leather, which is an integral element of the traditional festive male costume of the mountain people, featuring several straps and small pockets, with copper or brass buckles and rivets. It is worth noting that all these elements were designed not just for beauty and aesthetics (although, perhaps, for that too :-) ), but for practicality, as the Hutsuls, who were legendary Carpathian robbers – the opryshky – used chereses to always have pistols, bullets and powder, axes and knives, wallets, pipes, pouches with tobacco, etc. Of course, in our time, wearing a cheres in everyday life makes little sense, but such a beautiful item can be a wonderful gift, being a bright addition to a man's embroidered shirt, or an extraordinary souvenir, with the selection of which the online store "Karpaty.Rocks" can help.
It is well known that wide leather belts have been used in Ukraine since ancient times. As noted by the famous Ukrainian ethnographer, writer, and folklorist Oleksa Voropay, chereses (long leather bags with a strap at one end and a buckle at the other) were worn by our glorious salt traders – the chumaks, who actually used them to store money and carry smoking accessories, as well as shepherds from the steppes who lived in southern Ukraine.
The Hutsul chereses are quite wide, sometimes up to 45 cm, belts made from one or two pieces of leather sewn together. They were fastened with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7, and sometimes even 9 and 12 buckles, as in the case of the most famous opryshky leader Oleksa Dovbush. The Hutsuls wore wide chereses while working in the woods or during timber rafting (the "fastened" chereses on weekdays, which were not decorated), as well as on holidays ("tsirovani" – luxuriously decorated chereses).
Wide Hutsul belts were decorated depending on their shape and functional purpose. The chereses were adorned with embossing using a special device for longitudinal stripes across the entire surface of the item. The edges were decorated with braiding made of colored leather strips in a checkerboard pattern or spikes. The decor was complemented with stars, diamonds, symbols of solar signs, and more.
The cheres was worn over trousers and a shirt and protected not only the internal organs of the Hutsuls but also strengthened the muscles of the midsection during heavy physical exertion, such as for shepherds who traveled dozens of kilometers daily on steep slopes, or for timber rafters.
Despite the fact that today chereses are not a daily attribute of mountain clothing, it has always been and will always be a wonderful talisman and a true adornment for any man, an element of festive attire and a source of pride for every Hutsul, as it emphasizes strength and masculinity.
Interesting fact. Historically, it is known that a young man in the Carpathians became a true legyn only when his father gifted him a cheres on his birthday.
