John Paul II Family Home in Wadowice

ul. Kościelna 7, 34-100 Wadowice, Poland

The Holy Father John Paul II Family Home museum (Muzeum Dom Rodzinny Ojca Świętego Jana Pawła II) in Wadowice — a town in the foothills of the Little Beskids — occupies the townhouse at 7 Kościelna Street, right by the market square. Here, on 18 May 1920, Karol Józef Wojtyła, the future Pope John Paul II, was born. The house was built around 1870; in 1919, when the Wojtyła family moved in, it belonged to the Jewish merchant Chiel Bałamuth, whose hardware shop and a bookbinder's workshop occupied the ground floor. The Wojtyłas rented a first-floor flat of a kitchen, bedroom and parlour and lived there for almost twenty years. In 1929 Karol lost his mother, three years later his elder brother Edmund died, and in 1938, after finishing school, he moved with his father to Kraków.

The museum arose almost spontaneously after 16 October 1978, when Cardinal Wojtyła was elected pope: journalists and pilgrims began coming to the flat, where other tenants still lived. The first exhibition opened on 18 May 1984. Later the townhouse was bought, and to a design by the architects Barbara and Jarosław Kłaput, creators of the Warsaw Rising Museum, the building was restored to its 1930s appearance; the new narrative exhibition opened on 9 April 2014.

What to see

  • The Wojtyła family flat — the heart of the museum: three interconnecting rooms recreated from the memories of neighbours and friends. Here are the most precious family mementoes: his mother Emilia's silver handbag and gold medallion, a bookshelf, the family tableware and a photo album. In the small middle room Karol was born on 18 May 1920 to the sound of the Litany of Loreto; after his mother's death it became the bedroom of father and son, and family life moved to the kitchen. From the kitchen window young Karol could see a sundial inscribed "Time passes, eternity awaits".
  • "Wadowice – Little Homeland" — the interwar town where cultures and religions intertwined; it also recalls the Jewish community, about a fifth of the population, and his childhood friend Jerzy Kluger.
  • The Kraków years — studies at the Jagiellonian University, a passion for poetry and theatre, forced labour at the Solvay plant during the war, the priesthood; a sequence of the vestments Wojtyła wore at different stages of his ministry.
  • The pontificate — the first papal cassock, rooms on his travels around the world and on remembrance; in all about 1,200 m² of exhibition space on four floors, divided into 16 thematic zones.

Practical information

The entrance to the exhibition is from the market square, and since 7 April 2026 the ticket office has been at 2 Kościelna Street, in the Pilgrim's Garden behind the museum building; to avoid queues, buy tickets online. Wadowice is easy to reach by train or bus, then a few minutes' walk to the square; drivers can use the town's paid car parks.
