About

The Popradské Pleso hut is a large mountain hotel on the north-western shore of Popradské pleso in the Mengusovská dolina of the High Tatras. The building gives its altitude as 1494 m, although the survey mark on its wall reads about 1508 m. It is one of the key trail junctions of the Tatras, where the Tatra Magistrála meets the paths from Štrbské Pleso, to Rysy and to Kôprovský štít.

The first hut of the Hungarian Carpathian Society appeared at the tarn in 1879 and burnt down more than once; a wooden building from 1899 lasted into the 1960s. The present large house was built in 1957–1961 to a design by the architects L. Bauer and F. Čapka and opened at Christmas 1961. Its tall shingled gable roof and stone ground floor echo folk architecture.

It offers around 165 beds. The rebuilt Majláth Hut stands next door, and the yellow trail leads to the nearby Symbolic Cemetery of those who died in the mountains. Mountain rescue (HZS): 18 300.
