Lviv Soap Workshop, Lviv

Lviv, Lviv region, Ukraine

Lviv Soap Workshop (Lvivska Maisternia Myla) is one of those Old Town shops you smell before you see. On Brativ Rohatyntsiv Street, a few minutes' walk from Rynok Square, the façade of an old townhouse is wrapped in flowers and greenery, a crowned lion crest hangs above the door, and soap bubbles and the scent of lavender, citrus and coffee drift out onto the cobbles. This is not a souvenir kiosk selling imported goods but the flagship shop of a Ukrainian brand of handmade natural cosmetics that was born right here, in the heart of Lviv.

What it is

The brand was started by a woman and mother looking for gentle care products for the sensitive skin of children and adults. From the first bars of soap made with simple "kitchen" ingredients, the workshop grew into a proper manufactory with its own production: every bar, cream and scrub is made by hand. Lviv Soap Workshop has since opened shops in other cities, but this one on Brativ Rohatyntsiv Street is the historic original where it all began. Inside you'll find wooden shelves up to the ceiling, crates of colourful soap cut to size in front of you, jars, bottles and gift boxes.

Why drop in

  • Choose soap by scent. The range is wide, from classic lavender, orange or coffee soap to seasonal novelties. Most bars can be smelled and examined, and staff will suggest what suits dry or oily skin.
  • Buy a gift from Lviv. Handmade soap is a light, affordable and practical souvenir that takes up little room in your luggage. Ready-made gift sets and boxes are available.
  • Discover natural care. Besides soap, the shop sells solid shampoos, sugar and salt scrub-masks, collagen masks, face cleansers, hand creams and butters, bath salts and powders, and bath bombs.

What to try and buy

Visitors most often praise the solid shampoos — they lather well, last long and are handy for travel — as well as the bright, dessert-like soap slices that look like little cakes. For home, pick up bath salt or a bath bomb; for your hands, a rich butter. The workshop stresses that it uses natural oils and raw materials, so the products suit those who read labels carefully. Prices are moderate; check exact costs in the shop or in the brand's online store.

Soap-making has deep roots in Lviv: for centuries the city traded in wax, oils and soap, and today small manufactories — of candles, chocolate and soap — are bringing the spirit of craft shops back to the Old Town. Here you can see how handmade goods can be modern, colourful and genuinely useful in everyday life.

  • Tip: visit during the day when it's quieter, so you can choose scents at leisure. The brand does not advertise workshops for visitors on its website — this is first and foremost a shop with its own production.

The shop is rated 4.8 out of 5 on Google Maps (over 200 reviews): guests praise the scents, the wide choice and the quality of the solid shampoos, although there are occasional complaints about service at busy times.
