Ostrich Farm, Khust

Khust, Zakarpattia region, Ukraine

The Ostrich Farm in Khust is a small family-run farm on the edge of town where African ostriches have been bred for more than twenty years. It was founded in 2002 by farmer Vasyl Perets, and the first birds came here from Slovakia. The farm’s main business is raising and selling ostriches, but visitors are welcome too: the owner leads the tours himself, shows the adult birds and chicks and explains how to look after the world’s largest birds. If you are wondering where to see ostriches in Zakarpattia or where to go with children near Khust, this is a simple and friendly spot.

What to see

The main residents are the adult ostriches, which roam large pens and study the guests curiously through the fence. Depending on the season you may also see chicks: in spring and summer the little ones warm up under red lamps in the hatchery, while older striped chicks run around the yard. Visitors often mention being shown freshly hatched chicks and ostrich eggs, each weighing as much as about two dozen hen’s eggs.

Besides the ostriches, the farm keeps ponies and miniature foals, a donkey, geese and ducks. You can feed them all with feed sold on site. Some of the animals let you stroke them, and children are especially delighted when an ostrich carefully takes grain from their palm.

A little about ostriches

The African ostrich is the largest bird on Earth: an adult male can stand up to 2.5 metres tall and weigh more than a hundred kilograms. Ostriches cannot fly, but they can run at up to 70 km/h, and a powerful kick protects them from predators. In Ukraine ostriches are raised for meat, eggs, feathers and leather, and farms like the one in Khust have also become a popular family outing: seeing such a giant up close makes a vivid impression on children and adults alike.

For families with children

  • A tour with the owner. Vasyl explains how long ostriches live, how fast they run and why they do not really bury their heads in the sand; the tour is lively and informal.
  • Feeding. Buy feed at the entrance and approach the pens together with a farm worker, as ostriches are strong and can peck sharply.
  • Souvenirs. You can buy an ostrich feather or egg; eggs are sometimes ordered in advance and collected a few days later.
  • Time. A visit takes about an hour, so it is easy to combine with a walk around Khust.

This is a working farm, not a polished amusement park: the yard is simple, some buildings are old and the access road is narrow. Reviews are mostly warm thanks to the owner’s hospitality, but some are critical of the state of the grounds, so expect a rural atmosphere.
