Shayan water under the Zapovitna brand

Shayanski Dzherela (“Shayan Springs”) is a company in the village of Shayan near Khust that bottles Shayanska mineral water under the Zapovitna brand. The company was founded in 1998 and in 2011 merged with Zapovitni Karpatski Dzherela. It is listed among Transcarpathia's craft producers on the region's official tourism portal. Its distinctive feature is the short path from the depths to the bottle: according to the producer, the water is bottled directly from well No. 242, 180 metres deep, on the grounds of the Shayan sanatorium, and the plant stands at the foot of the mountain right next to the well.

Why go to Shayan

Plant tours are not confirmed, so the main reason to come is the spa itself. Shayan is a well-known balneological resort in Zakarpattia where treatment is based on the local carbonated waters, and you can taste the water straight from the source at the pump room. The producer sells bottled Shayanska and Zapovitna wholesale with delivery across Ukraine; the price list can be downloaded from the website, and buying a few packs on site should be arranged by phone.

What to try: the water, the process, the history

Shayanska is a carbonated, low-mineralised sodium-bicarbonate medicinal table water with total mineralisation of 2.5–5 g/l. The Shayan deposit lies within the volcanic Vyhorlat-Hutyn ridge; according to the producer, Shayanska comes close to the famous Georgian Borjomi in its bicarbonate content. At the plant the water is piped into stainless-steel tanks, passed through quartz and polypropylene filters, treated with UV light and bottled without contact with air.

The producer recommends 0.5–1 litre a day, chilled or at room temperature, and for health purposes warmed to 36–40 °C three times a day. Before a course of medicinal table water, especially with digestive, liver or metabolic conditions, consult a doctor.

Shayan waters have a long history: the first written mentions date from 1753, from 1818 the Zamkova Kupil water-cure house — one of the oldest in Máramaros County, described in 1887 by I. Boleman, who recommended Shayan water for anaemia and stomach catarrh — operated here, and the Shayan sanatorium opened in the 1950s. The producer's water won first (2004) and second (2005) places at the World Aqua Ukraine tasting competition, wins in the regional round of the “100 Best Goods of Ukraine” (2008, 2009), a gold medal in 2016 and “Choice of the Country” status (2021).
